@juls56 - I think you have a great shot at getting into W&M if you plan on applying ED. Just make sure you sign up for an interview when they open up on May 1st. Itâs a great place to study history (Especially if you are into US history). Also start planing out your why W&M essay (think about how itâs a fit for you both acedemically and how you will be an involved member of the tribe).
Thank you for your help and suggestions. I will take everything youâve said into account!
I am definitely planning to interview over the summer. Thanks for the feedback!
Washington and Lee? Pretty selective, but might meet need / not too far from home.
William and Mary is a wonderful school. If it is affordable, go for ED. I went there, and it is on my D25 list. Perfect place to study history. Very rigorous but supportive atmosphere. Having Colonial Williamsburg on the edge of campus is charming and slightly hilarious. Jogging on Duke of Glochester street past tourists in tricornered hats, horse drawn carriages and fully garbed colonial people is a normal part of W&M existence that you canât really get anywhere else.
For a safety, look at Miami University in Oxford Ohio. It is like W&M on steroids. Very similar vibes but larger. Beautiful brick buildings. Tons of trees. Their conference center is even a replica of the Wren Building. My son is there and loves it. They have a chart on their website with merit aid listed. With your grades, youâd get at least 10K and likely honors college which means the honors dorm, priority registration and other perks. Depending on where in WV you live, it shouldnât be a long drive. We pass thru WV on our drive there from VA.
Are you planning to audition for marching band in college? Are you going to continue with AFROTC? If the answer of either is yes, those are questions worth investigating as the differences in schools can vary wildly. Using the 2 colleges in this post as examples:
Miami: has AFROTC and a marching band
W&M - no AFROTC, no marching band. They do have a student run pep band. The William & Mary Pep Band (@wmpepband) ⢠Instagram photos and videos
I am planning a trip to Miami right now, thank you for the insight!
Washington & Lee has a full tuition scholarship earmarked for a WV resident. My daughterâs friend is from Harperâs Ferry and got it last year. Worth a shot to apply to it as well as their Full Ride Johnson Scholarship that they give to 10% of their class.
From their website:
The J. Edward Lewis Scholarship Trustprovides full tuition scholarships to Washington and Lee students who are deserving graduates of West Virginiaâs Oak Hill High School, secondarily to graduates from any high school in Fayette County, West Virginia, and lastly to any deserving graduates from any high school in the state of West Virginia.
Requirements:
- Must be a resident of West Virginia and have graduated from a West Virginia high school.
- Must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in order to renew the award annually.
- Must maintain full-time student status with Washington and Lee University to renew annually.
The J. Edward Lewis Scholarship Trust is administered by JP Morgan. To request an application or for further information, contact Cory Whitlock at JP Morgan.
