Especially as these rankings can change easily from one year to the next or within a few years. Schools fall just out of or move just into the “T20” regularly. It’s a pretty arbitrary cutoff.
Absolutely, but boy do I hate it when people quote my typos ![]()
I didn’t even notice!! I was too busy assuming you meant Emory was at 24, when it was at 20 not too long ago when a relative of mine went there, which was what prompted the response. (She loved it btw, and she completed her premed requirements but like many others decided to major in something else and didn’t continue with medicine.)
Rutgers Honors is possible but not certain. Many Honors colleges are holistic. But Rutgers is great period. Be excited for Rutgers, Honors or not.
Have you looked at Berea? Seriously - it’s an LAC tailor made for those with need. The entire school.
I don’t get Stevens or Drew - do they have a full ride for local NJ kids? How about another public close to where you live or Ramapo?
Love what @Greatpyrmom said - she’s right - Emory helps you because they don’t necessarily include your 9th grade scores - and you had a C.
Didn’t know about W&M - if that’s for OOS kids too, then an absolute home run - and stands tall with any university in America. Forget the rank - W&M is perceived at the same level as UVA, UNC, U MIch, the UCs - the top publics in the country.
Yes, I meant Emory is currently ranked 24 and Notre Dame 18. I haven’t had my morning coffee yet so I hope I am making sense lol. Emory historically has been a “top 20”. It was kind of crazy to see the uproar in the alumni Facebook group when they fell a few spots. News flash: nothing has changed folks.
No.
Just a point of clarification on William and Mary. The new scholarship for out of state pell eligible students is not guaranteed and I think they are only awarding a couple of them per year. (By contrast they guarantee at least full tuition and fees for all in state pell students) In addition to the new “Lighting the Way” scholarship, the William and Mary Scholars program provides scholarships to low income students from diverse backgrounds. They have changed the wording about these scholarships on the website to comply with the Trump administration but in practice they are still diversity scholarships. These vary in amount and in state students are given preference, but a close friend of my son is out of state and has a scholarship covering full out of state tuition and fees. I’m not sure if they ever give full rides under this program. William and Mary is very serious about increasing accessibility for low income students so I think it could be worthwhile to apply and see what they come back with.
It was a $2.5 million dollar grant - so I know it wasn’t for all. But it is still worth a hail mary opportunity.
The thing that worries me though is that OP is a bit more confident than he should be - once we learned the STEM grades.
I know Rutgers is happening - but it’s a 90/10…it’s not in and of itself an assured admission and I have no idea on Honors College, but it’s definitely not a safety.
Then again, OP should know that Honors Colleges are awesome for experience if their curriculum fits you but they’re not necessarily helpful in getting to the next step (job, grad school). In fact, my kids did hundreds of job apps - not a single time was there even a place to add it. It is, on your resume (if that’s seen), of course.
Stevens does offer substantial need based grants like Rutgers for NJ kids. As for Drew, my counselor told me that they offer very good financial aid packages for high achieving low income kids, not to mention their guaranteed BA/MD medical school program.
agree, OP, with your grades in stem classes, smaller environments with more support may be needed to make sure your premed requirements are successful (esp physics, chemistry that he struggled with)
Thank you!!! Will look into this. William and Mary Scholars, and there’s also the James Monroe research stipend scholarship that 10% of accepted students get.
Thank you for your post, I’m looking into Washington and Lee for that purpose. Smaller student to professor ratio and a more intimate support system
colgate has not been brought up yet but it is a medium sized school that may be less competitive and isnt as small as some other LACS, also Davidson in North Carolina is a school that people love
Research Scholar is just a small research grant. The 1693 is what you’d need.
Maybe your counselor knows something about Drew the rest of us don’t. If it’s an easy app, then fine - but don’t make it a priority. But Drew has budget issues - not to the level of bankruptcy, but a small endowment. They’ve had to sell some things off to raise money I believe.
Here’s some info on Stevens that might be helpfu. I don’t know if any of it means full ride.
Before applying, you might ask - I assume it’s not commutable.
New Jersey Educational Opportunity Fund | Stevens Institute of Technology
Looks commutable as it’s a 45 minute drive.
Think about what that means in practice for early/late lectures, social stuff with people on campus etc.. apart from the fact that once you factor in parking etc, it’s 2 hours out of your day every day. I don’t know anything about traffic patterns there but if any of that coincides with a rush hour commuter flow, that’s going to add to time and stress.
Do you want a four year experience? You ideally want to be on campus - so you have people to meet, socialize. You can be in study groups. You can go to your dorm room 4 times a day…go back out if needed late night.
You can’t really do all that as a commuter period - and 45 mins?
And cars have costs…if not cars, buses have costs and schedules.
Think deeper because you are doing this four years, day after day.
What sounds easy on paper isn’t necessarily conducive.
Yes-100%, but for a school like Rutgers where it’s a 10-15 minute drive, I can meet, socialize, be in study groups etc
I think those 45 minutes are without traffic.
Yes, the comment was related to Stevens and 45 mins. It seems there are much better schools to chase.
Someone mentioned Colgate. It’s one of the 55 QB partners - so you should really investigate all partners - and if that’s a fit (closer to home than some others), then it’s worthy of a slot (if it’s a fit to you after research).
