CHE is - IMO - a total fit school and it really sounds like it is a good fit for you. I am not familiar with how predicted a-levels work but it sounds like you are a strong student; combine that with fit for CHE and I think applying ED is a good call assuming the logistics e.g., finances, transportation etc, work. I think highlighting your research and community outreach in the why CHE essay makes a lot of sense. My older D is a CHE grad (also HD) and she, too, had the realization that it was the right fit once she understood their mandate and how her interests and experiences aligned with that. Sounds like you are in the same place and drafting your application to align with their mandate as well. You can take studio art classes as a CHE major if you choose and structure your schedule to allow. Plus, the museum on campus is pretty cool so your art interest can be served if you choose. If you have any other way please don’t take the maintenance loan (I LOATHE ThMay for converting that grant for low income students into further loans). That’d be like $67,000 in debt for 3 years and you’d pay continuously unknown amounts since the thresholds for repayment change constantly (originally they were £29k) as well as interest rates.
And if you qualify for the maintenance loans you probably qualify for excellent financial aid as a US citizen, with a maximum of 27k in loans over 4 years.
I would add a few universities that may provide you with sufficient FA while not as selective as the ones you listed. Maximize the CommonApp with colleges that will NOT saddle you with 67k in debt. EA preferably.
What about ETZH? (Not sure about costs). TUM?
There are French programs in English I can look up, to see if any focus on your academic interests.
I agree Cornell CHE ED is the right choice.
What does the NPC indicate for the other universities?
Devote a lot of time to prepping for the SAT. Scoring high is quite difficult even if the material is simple.
