African American, Female
GPA: 3.99 W (don’t know how to find out UW)
3 AP Classes last year, 4 this year
ACT: 27 SAT:1840
EC: Captain of robotics team, president of MJCL, student at Harvard summer program, Theatre (lead roles in 3 shows)
Problems: Last year: C+ in AP Chem
THIS year: C+ in AP Stats 1st tri but B on Midyear report b/c I fixed it and newly received C+ in AP Microeconomics!! :((

I got a letter of recommendation explaining the type of student I am from my AP Statistics teacher, but I am SERIOUSLY scared about my AP grades. I live in MI and would REALLY like to know what chances I have here because NYU is my dream college!

That’s simplifying college admissions to an almost ignorant extent… Anyways, hopefully your essay can help show who you are and maybe your urm status will help. Your GPA is fine. Just try to maintain your grades. If you’re a senior, just try to relax. If you are a junior or sophomore try to retake the SAT and ACT. Good luck!

It will also depend on what school of NYU you are applying to. Steinhardt, Gallatin and CAS will be easier than Stern in terms of GPA and scores. Talent-based programs in Tisch and Steinhardt will consider auditions/ portfolios for 50% of your application.

But in general, NYU really does take a holistic approach. There were many excellent things about my D’s application, and some weaker points, as well.

She dropped math in 11th grade and had 72 in regular chem and a 75 in algebra 2 trig in sophomore year. She rec’d college credit for anatomy and physiology junior year (with a final grade of 83) and actually had that teacher write one of her letters of recommendations. I’m sure he spoke about how she took the class becasue she enjoyed it and thought it would help her as an artist. He also probably spoke of how hard she worked even though she was not the typical pre-med type of student who normally takes the class.

There is no way that the process is as simplified as azndude describes it. Despite the fact that academics/ GPA (90.02weighted average) was the weakest part of D’s application (art portfolio, EC’s with leadership, letters of recommendation and decent test scores–2000 SAT/29 ACT–being her strengths), NYU never even asked for her 1st quarter senior year grades. If “numbers” were that important, I feel they would have. (She was accepted ED.)

Thank you guys so much! I feel a little better about my situation. I’m applying to CAS and in my essay I explained my home situation and how that made things difficult for me over the past two years. In spite of my mom having a cancerous tumor and the constant struggle between my parents I still keep my nose in the books and do as much as I can for other people. I hope they can see the real me through everything and I thank you guys for the support. :)

Take a look at the link I posted. The common data set is published by colleges each year. This is current. And would suoercede the just facts numbers you posted. NYU does not publish individual scores for each school. In general, stern has the reputation of being more competitive in terms of scores than the other schools, but I do not have numbers to prove that.

If you are unfamiliar with the common data set, I suggest you read it through for any college you are interested in. It is full of useful info.

It is also possible that the just facts numbers do not include liberal/global studies students. In the past those statistics were not included in 4 year data, but now it is.
