Chance My Daughter: Bowdoin, Swarthmore, Skidmore [VT resident, 4.0/1500, NMSF, English/Poli Sci, need COA <24K]

If using the common app there is a section for additional information. I agree to have counselor write in rec but also have your child explain it here also. My kid changed languages 1/2 thru school and put an explanation here.

Curious to see what acceptances came through with the right amount of aid.

If Spanish wasn’t offered at her school, make sure that this is mentioned in her counselor recommendation or somewhere else on transcript (and/or on school profile). These top schools with true holistic review will take that into consideration.

Note, Spanish teachers are apparently very hard to find. We live in a city and our local HS and a local private K-8 I know both had a heck of time finding new ones in recent years.

Most regular decision acceptances have not yet been sent out. And many early action ones are just getting sent.

The Op might not have heard anything
yet.

Oops and just realized this was an old thread .

Hi all. No news yet, as we just check the mail hopefully each day! RD apps in at 10 schools, including the three in the title here. Interviews at maybe 6 of the 10. Not one bit of news (good or bad) yet. So, lots of fingers crossed. But this thread (and forum) have been really helpful so far.

Do you have an assured acceptance with a COA under $24k on the list ?

@tsbna44 they haven’t heard anything
yet. From the OP.

Yes. I was asking on that list of 10 - that they haven’t heard from - is there an assured admission with a definite under $24k?

So in other words is there an assured place to land?

Given location and NMSF, maybe a UMaine as an example
.

Literally no news. Four of the ten schools she applied to are TE. No acceptances, no safe place to land yet at any price
nothing at all. So it goes in RD land, I guess, particularly in a messed up FAFSA year. As parents, it’s our first rodeo.

If I were you, I’d apply to Maine, Alabama, Tulsa
wherever.

I’d check dates - how late can you apply - and still take advantage of your national merit - which will cost you even less than TE.

Everyone needs to apply to a school that is:

  1. Admissions assured

  2. Affordability assured

  3. Ideally where the student would be happy - but no matter what happens, even with an acceptance, you need #2.

So - if it were me - I would find the most important school on your list - which I just described. It might not be the most desired - but it is the most important.

You have a $24K budget - there are few (W Carolina is one) and then the 3 I just mentioned with NM - that will come in at budget. There are more.

Hoping your TE gets accepted and applying only to schools that you may (or may not get into) and you may or may not be able to afford is not a wise strategy.

If you had what I described - then it would be wise.

So please focus on finding that admission and affordability safety.

Good luck.

Where did she end up applying? Any clearer ideas yet about where she might want to land?

The other day she said she was legitimately excited about all 10 places she applied to. All three in the title of this Chance Me, plus Williams, Wesleyan and Middlebury are reaches for anybody. The other four are a bit lower in the stratosphere. Three have accept rates in the 40s or 50s, but cost will likely be an issue even with TE or merit. One is a very niche-y small LAC that she liked a lot and is somewhat more affordable (St. John’s.) It’s a tightrope. She has applied for about ten jillion scholarships that could end up helping.

St. Johns is an amazing school for the right people. Glad that she liked it!

I hate to keep going back to this - but what is your plan?

It’s like you’re betting the house on black in roulette.

If it doesn’t pan out - then what ? You’ve lost it all.

You are missing THE MOST IMPORTANT school on your list.

Sounds like a great list. St. John’s has raised serious funds recently to help cut student costs, and it’s a wonderful choice for those who are into its particular program (a nephew visited and also loved it, though ultimately decided it was too small). Hoping she has a difficult–in the best way–choice to make later this spring!

Did she apply to any of the scholarships?

She’s applied to so many scholarships I can’t believe it. Most of them are quite small
but not all. I know I didn’t work this hard when I was headed to college.

D24 received first acceptance last night, of 10 apps, 4 of which were TE. She got TE (set rate) plus merit at St. Lawrence to bring COA down to 29. It was nice to get an accept, and rumor has it they’ll stack need on top of TE. We’ll see. Still out of range on cost
but nearing the road that leads to the ballpark we are in.
