Chance S24 4.0 UW with strong leadership for Southeastern schools [FL resident, 1400 SAT]

Wow this sounds a lot like my son last year. My son had a tad better SAT score but not as many APs and nowhere close to all the extracurricular activities your son has and also worked. We are from the northeast.

Peers and especially guidance counselors pressed him to apply to the typical colleges up here (BC, Cornell, Villanova, etc). He wanted the southeast. We made two visits down and saw UGA, Clemson, Auburn, Ole Miss and Alabama.

He like latter three a lot more than the first two.

We planned a third trip FL to see FSU and UF but he said he was good with what he saw and applied to Auburn, bama and ole miss early. Got in a then applied to the honors college of each and got in. He narrowed it down to Auburn and bama as ole miss wasn’t a great match for his desired major.

After a lot of back and forth he chose Auburn which is the school based on our visits I always thought he would end up at. Knew it pretty much as soon as we started walking around campus that it suited him. He really liked bama as well but in the end I think it was a little too big and frat scene knowing nobody seemed a little overwhelming.

In the end Auburn was the right choice for him. I know things can change and quick but he loves it there. Joined a fraternity which has really helped him settle in, likes his classes, loves the football games, intramurals sports, clubs, the town, the size of the school, really everything.

We like as parents also having nice hotel and dining options when we got to visit. Such a great vibe down there.

I will say some of his friends went to ole miss and they love it there.

Suggestions:

Don’t visit schools like these when there is a football game, at least not your first visit as it is impossible to get a feel for the school itself even though it is a lot of fun. Maybe if you were going for a second time. But we went to an ole miss game and never got a great look at the campus as everything is shut down.

Honors college was a great decision as it made getting housing and classes easier. Put down housing deposit as soon as you can for any school he is seriously considering.

Merit money is also nice and he felt rewarded for his hard work in high school.

When you go down to the school do a tour and also go to his desired major if he knows and tour those buildings. Talk to students who bartend or waiter and get their take on student life. They are less scripted and more candid.

Enjoy the process. Looking back it was a great time and experience traveling around with my son.

Hope that helps a little.
Good luck.

Thank you! I love hearing your son’s story and it’s great to know he is thriving at Auburn and that Honors confers a substantial benefit. I also hear nothing but raves about Auburn. My son casually mentioned this week that Auburn is in his top 4. No idea what else is. I am sure he would be very happy there.

Thank you also for the tip about not visiting on a football weekend. We likely can’t visit until Spring because his cross country season won’t wrap up until Thanksgiving. We are glad that we think he will have some wonderful choices.

Update on admissions so far:

UGA no merit
FSU w bright futures (full tuition) + $2K per semester
TCU w/ Dean’s scholarship $25K/year
South Carolina - tuition reduction to in state rate
Clemson acceptance says includes merit but no amount given
Ole Miss w $16K/yr merit
Auburn no merit yet

We haven’t heard from honors colleges yet and still waiting to hear from Richmond, UF, and UVA. He is working on Wake application (I think)

We are thrilled with his options so far! It will be a busy spring trying to tour and make decisions

Congrats.

I take it, FSU Is in the lead ?

I think Honors there is tough. My daughter got both UGA and U of SC but no FSU. It’s a tough one.

My son does not have a favorite that he has told me about. I am most excited about UGA! Some of that is bc I’m an alum. If S24 sticks with business, I really like what I have learned about Terry at Georgia. I am very curious to tour TCU. The scholarship brings cost in line with UGA, Auburn, and probably Clemson, and I like that it is smaller. Son is not excited to be quite so far away. I think FSU may be my second favorite behind UGA. If he somehow got in to SC Honors that would change the analysis.

You are extremely knowledgeable about schools. Do you have an opinion about which is best for business/finance?

Honestly of the schools listed I don’t see a huge difference in business colleges, but many have a there own subject/major they may excel in. So depending on what you son is going to major could make a difference as to what business college is best. Go to the websites, look at the majors, look at the course requirements. Maybe he can envision himself taking one track over another. School rankings will have less to do with that is ā€œbetterā€ compared to major and alumni network (which also depends on where he sees himself working and living after college.

Also search for student finance clubs at each. We found some were more active and impressive than others. Some even list jobs were graduates were placed (firm and city). There is a lot of info there if you start digging.

when you go to visit colleges make sure you tour the business colleges.

Wonderful suggestions. Thank you!

Congrats on being an alum.

I think for finance, it depends on what they want. If it’s to work at a company in the finance department, any of them are great.

If it’s to be in IB, I can’t say for sure. Perhaps TCU has connections. I know it places well in Poets & Quants. But if I was just going to work in a corporate job, I don’t think it will matter.

All the schools are solid but not all are direct admit - including Terry.

Honors - I would check what each offers. Not all are the same. So whereas my son signed up for Bamas, he didn’t for Purdue - didn’t suit his needs.

While my daughter got turned down for FSU Honors, they have an LLC for business and the cohort takes classes together - so that might work.

I’d find the right campus - and go from there. Perhaps a school without Honors would trump for your student a school with Honors.

And then there’s cost - in the end, you don’t want to strain.

Let’s be honest, for most kids, a UGA, FSU, Auburn, Clemson, Ole Miss, and U of SC will be indistinguishable from one another.

But where do they have the right fit? And that may include access (travel wise) That may include who is direct admit vs. who isn’t?

TCU is different enough that if it’s affordable, then you have to decide - is that what the student wants, etc?

Not a bad choice on the list.

But to me, FSU is really really enticing because of the full tuition and extra scholarship!!

I like it better than UF but Warrington will have its fans and that’s still to come.

And you can’t do the whole - but I went to UGA so UF is out!! Well you can…but it is your kid.

My better half did Arizona and her Masters at ASU - but still denies she went there and calls them the scum devils. Sometimes the loyalties have to pass…

My daughter is a finance major at Clemson, math minor, but plans on becoming an actuary. She was in the business llc freshman year, got into honors second semester freshman year (it was a last minute application so she didn’t apply to honors). She got a lot out of CUBS and feels honors is very helpful. She has 3 advisors (business, honors, and an unofficial actuary advisor). She had many interviews for a summer internship next summer and received offers from all of them, I believe. She loves everything about Clemson (we are from NJ). Her advisors have been amazing, guided her in course selection to meet graduation requirements and to pass actuary exams (her third one is in the spring, if she passes it will bump up her internship compensation, which is already pretty good).

I truly appreciate your very thoughtful and helpful reply. You make lots of great points and suggestions. I look forward to seeing what he thinks on tours and we definitely are grateful that he has so many great options

UF definitely will not be ruled out due to football allegiance….husband and son both are die hard Gator fans!

As for finance, we have lots of connections in private banking/wealth management and also with some venture capital and IB groups. Those are preliminary thoughts. He also may consider law school. Definitely keeping an open mind.

Well there went FSU and UGA

OP here and results are in. S24 ended up applying to the following schools:

UVA - rejected (applied TO)
Richmond- deferred (applied TO)
UF - accepted in state (Bright Futures)
FSU - accepted in state w Bright Futures + Vires
TCU - accepted business w Dean’s Scholarship 27K/year
S Carolina - accepted Honors College w OOS tuition waiver
UGA - accepted, no honors or merit
Clemson - accepted, merit TBD
Auburn- accepted, 11k/year merit
Ole Miss - accepted Honors, 14k/year merit

Thrilled to have these great choices and he is having a hard time choosing, but he will be in a great place no matter what he decides

Thank you to everyone for your input along the way and hopefully S24’s results will be helpful to others

Did he end up applying ED1 or 2 to Richmond?

No, he applied to Richmond EA and was deferred. He ultimately decided he really wanted a much bigger school.

How exciting for him! Good luck making a decision. Just curious if he applied TO to South Carolina/Clemson? DS25 has similar list and very similar stats/resume

Thank you!

He submitted scores to both South Carolina and Clemson. Interestingly, he was accepted to every school where he submitted scores, and rejected/deferred at the only two schools to which he did not submit scores.

Finance doing what?

I think he has some wonderful options! Congratulations on getting accepted to SC honors college! That’s terrific…and with a reduction to instate tuition also. Does that move this one up on your son’s list?

Thank you. Yes! South Carolina is the current front runner!

He is not totally sure what he wants to do, and Finance seems like a good major that can lead to jobs, and that also will be useful if he ends up deciding to go to law school. He doesn’t want to move to NYC or a major city, so he probably would be more interested in private banking or corporate finance jobs than IB. We do think the advising at SCHC would help him figure out his options.
