Chances for Carnegie Mellon?

Your extracurriculars are great but not necessarily outstanding. In general, good extracurriculars, even outstanding extracurriculars will not compensate for an unimpressive transcript. And being an asian male in STEM coming from California means they you are in a very competitive pool filled with people who have both outstanding transcripts and outstanding extracurricular accomplishments.

What really concerns me is that even your weighted GPA doesn’t seem very high. If I were to make assumption based on what you’ve provided, I’d guess that you either did relatively* poorly in regular level classes or really** poorly in rigorous courses. Neither of these situations is ideal for admission to competitive colleges. But context matters. Different schools weigh their GPA’s differently and your school may not offer a lot of AP/honors classes (though I would assume it does since it’s highly competitive). Or maybe it was just a bad freshman year (which is common and usually understood by universities).

With that said, you certainly have a shot at admission. If your essays and recs are as good as you say they are, then that’s a big win. And, to my knowledge, biology isn’t one of Carnegie’s most competitive majors (at least not as competitive as CS) so that’s a plus. At this point, your application is basically done and there isn’t much more you can/should do. I hope that you are applying to at least 1 affordable safety school that you’d be ok attending.

By relatively, I mean relative to other applicants to schools like Carnegie. So that would be mostly A’s and B’s and possibly a C. For most people, this isn’t poor at all.

By really, I mean mostly B’s but some A’s and C’s too. Again, not that bad but not great for competitive admissions.
