Chances for...quite a few schools

I am not a huge fan of asking stuff like this, but I would really appreciate if someone gave me an objective view of my chances for a few different schools.

Schools: Carleton
Cornell
Davidson
Duke
UMich
UNC Chapel Hill (EA)
Vanderbilt
WashU

Academics and Whatnot: My school is a well regarded boarding school in North Carolina. All of our classes are either honors or college level, bu I’ve taken ten official AP classes since I started high school

Weighted GPA: 5.0
Unweighted GPA: Like 3.75
Rank: Our school doesn’t rank. If they did we’d all be throwing ourselves out of windows.
SAT: CR 760, Math 750, Writing 660 (8)
SAT 2s: US History 720, Math II 700 (Not the greatest, I know. >.>)

APs: I’m only self reporting my fives and fours. I have three threes that I am not particularly pumped about them seeing.>.>

World: 5
Euro:5
U.S.: 4
Psych: 5

Honors: Accepted to attend JSA Summer School at UVa back in 2013
Accepted into JSA DNC Symposium back in 2012
Beta Club Service Award
AP Scholar with Distinction
National Merit Commended

Extracurriculars: 1.) Appointed as the Young Democrats High School Caucus’ National Finance Chair. I go on weekly conference calls and spend a good deal of time making budgets and planning out fundraising efforts. I’m hoping this looks good, as I’m putting a lot of stock into it pulling up my application.

2.) I volunteered upwards of 100 hours for the Obama campaign back in 2012. Mainly canvassing and voter registration stuff. A good chunk of my CommonApp essay is about this.

3.) Taught a seminar about United States Presidential Elections. We had about 12 classes over the course of the trimester, and it was pretty popular throughout the school.

4.) Model United Nations member since freshman year. I’ve always been very active in i, but I haven’t pursued leadership opportunities here. Mostly just including it on apps to create a narrative about political involvement.

5.) US History and English TA.

6.) Beta Club President for 2012-2013 school year.

7.) Student council 2012-2013 school year.

My recs are both Humanities teachers who know me really well, so I think they’ve written something really great. Same for my counselor. Plus the one who is closest to me attended both Duke and Vanderbilt, and I’m hoping that that somehow benefits me. My essays are fairly strong and I’v had them looked over by peers and teachers more times than I can count. I’ve been so stressed with this lately and I’m sorry if I ever came off as rude or arrogant when I was writing this, I really do hate talking about myself. But so what do you think? Do my prospects look okay?

Carleton: I’m not sure
Cornell: Depends on what you’re applying to. Based on EC’s, ILR maybe? If so, I believe you have a good shot (high match)
Davidson: I’m not sure
Duke: Mid Reach
UMich: High Match
UNC Chapel Hill (EA): High Match
Vanderbilt: High Match
WashU: Low Reach

Don’t take my assumptions too seriously, I definitely could be wrong. IMO, not self reporting your 3’s was a bad idea - I read somewhere that if you don’t self report, they assume it’s a 1 (but I don’t think it will have a huge effect)

Also, since it does matter, I’m Caucasian.I’m also gay and that may affect my Duke chances because of their new LGBT exclusive essay.

Cornell: Low Reach
Duke: Low Reach
UMich: Match
UNC: Match
Vandy: Low Reach
WashU: Reach

your test scores are good, ec’s could be very strong for your app if you’re going into Political Science or gov’t, your admission will hinge on your essays.

chance me back :)?

Many thanks for chancing me. You seem to have a solid theme throughout your application, and stats within range of all of these schools. With that said, I’m sure a few, or all, will find a place for you.

Carleton: High-ish match (slightly below that if anything, but I’m not sure)
Cornell: Low reach
Davidson: High-ish match (same as Carleton)
Duke: Reach
UMich: High match
UNC Chapel Hill (EA): High match
Vanderbilt: High match
WashU: Low reach

You have a high chance at getting into at least one of your several matches, and a fair shot at the low reaches and up. I agree with jamesjunkers in that Cornell could see you as a solid fit depending on what you’re applying to.

Edit: Good luck!

Your test scores and gpa are a bit low, but your ECs look pretty good. I can only chance you for the schools I know about though.

Cornell - Reach
Duke - Reach
UMich - High match - Match (depends on major)
Vanderbilt - low reach

Always remember that you essays can change any of your chances.

These are just my thoughts, but I hope you end up where you want to be! Good Luck!

Trying for college of Human Ecology/PAM at Cornell. And again, thank you all so much for your help. Any responses are appreciated.

Bump. (Sorry)

@Gavvers‌: Duke’s new optional essay will help you ONLY if you can cogently, concisely, and compellingly explain how your experiences/orientation will make you a more valuable undergraduate. It is NOT designed to enhance – or to decrease – LGBT acceptance probability, pre se.

Your ecs look very interesting, but it might be beneficial if you had more leadership positions. Your couresload looks very challenging which is a definite plus. Also, although your GPA and SAT scores are good for many of your schools, I think that they are on the low of some of your top tier schools. BEST OF LUCK!!!

Carleton: IDK
Cornell: low reach/ mid reach (I get the impression essays are especially important here)
Davidson: IDK
Duke: reach
UMich: high match
UNC: high match
Vanderbilt: low reach
Wash U: reach

You’re well rounded. I would really push for political science / politics in essays (which you have) since you are so involved in that kind of stuff. It’s great because every community needs these kinds of politically driven intellectuals, and you fit that need!
Good luck!

Carleton: match
Cornell: Low reach
Davidson: High match
Duke: Reach
UMich: High match
UNC Chapel Hill (EA): High match
Vanderbilt: Low Reach
WashU: Low reach
