Chances of getting in?

Just to answer MD Mom’s question, the VP nomination is open for everyone to apply to. However, the VP (like every other MOC) can only have 5 cadets/mids at any academy at a given time, so he pretty much nominates about one person a year. This is handled through the academies themselves (ie the academy, not the VP himself or his staff, selects who gets that nom).

You were probably thinking of a Presidential nomination, which isn’t limited only to children of graduates. It’s for children of anyone who has served in the Armed Forces. The guidelines are for a minimum of 8 years, but it’s a bit trickier than that (reserve time, etc.) from what I’ve been told. But the parent wouldn’t have to be an academy grad, or even an officer, or even from that branch of service. If anyone thinks they may qualify, they could look into the specific requirements.
