Chances of Getting into the University of Chicago.....HELP!!!!!!!

I have a relatively similar situation. My GPA is low at like 3.1uw in a nationally ranked (within top 5 in NJ) high school, but my ECs are good, essays are very good, SAT score 2300+ (final take November, 2300+ on all practices) 800 Math IIC, 740 Bio/+Eco, 710 World History, and really good teacher recommendations (teachers love me even though i get abysmal grades lol, pretty sure 1 teacher put me down as the best student she ever had.) Various awards in Science Olympiad etc. First semester im working pretty hard this year. Acing AP Calc so far, and As in rest of my classes which are all either AP or Hnrs.

Anyway my low gpa is cuz I got really addicted to videogames sophomore year. 2.8uw that year, turned the ship around somewhat in junior year with like a 3.65. My essay somewhat addresses that. Anyway i think for cases like me and you it really comes down to the essay.

i actually think you may have better stats than the original poster. the fact that the gpa for junior year is so much higher than the soph year along with the sat II’s reinforce that you are no dummy. you really shouldn’t hard a time getting into uchi. i would rate the original poster as having a better chance of acceptance into uchi simply because of the original posters latin/native american hook.

IMO, GPA really comes before test scores. I mean, they want to know if you can succeed in day-in-day-out coursework.

gpa varies from high school to high school, it’s the class rank that is really what the school looks at to see how a student fares around people working in the same environment. since all high schools are different, the sat’s are used to measure certain abilities straight across the board. a lot of people may claim that the test is economically and racially biased, and it may be true, but it does give the schools a basic idea of how a student measures up from one school to another, from one state to another and from one region to another.

The SAT II’s can also indicate that you have actually managed to learn something in HS, even if your GPA is a little shabby (perhaps from not turning in homework freshman year) or no one from your school has ever applied to UChicago before.

What if I have a 3.0 GPA, 23 ACT but I have amazing ec’s like varsity sports, marching band, church service, ect. As well as amazing letters of recommendations from principle, PTSA President, coaches, ect. Also, Amazing essays. Would they even consider me?

Your chance is very slim (less than 15.8%, last year’s acceptance rate) with a 3.0 GPA. SAT 2300 is very helpful. Also connection with professor is a plus. Your case depends on your luck.
