The HI Express Downtown is on Spring St. If you head toward King St. and go down King toward the historic district you will run into Queen St. Husk is close to the corner of King St. and Queen St. where there are several top-notch restaurants all on Queen St. and practically all next door to one another: 82 Queen, Poogan’s Porch, and Husk. Very walkable to Magnolia’s!
Hanks!
The Holiday Inn Express is located off of the Crosstown, a busy thoroughfare, and not in easy walking distance to the historic area. You are closer to Upper King than than the East Bay corridor in which Magnolia’s is located. It’s an easy drive, however, and you can park in the Cumberland Street garage off of East Bay. It’s a bit of a walk from Husk to Magnolia’s. I’d suggest drinks before dinner at either High Cotton (usually a jazz singer or jazz ensemble in the bar) or McCrady’s (one of the most beautiful restaurant/bar spaces downtown). Both are near Magnolia’s. The Gin Joint is also in that same area.
If you have time, I’d suggest a stroll through Waterfront park and down the Battery before drinks and dinner.
McCradys is a gorgeous place.
One of our favorite spots for drinks is The Roof at the Vendue. A lovely place and a very easy walk to Magnolia’s either before or after dinner.
@thumper1 I can understand wanting to be close to the wedding venue and making your decision based on that. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t be the same choice if you wanted to be close to the historic district. It’s going to be a couple of miles away, which isn’t going to be walking distance for everyone.
I’m sure that hotels in the Historic District are twice as expensive as her current hotel on a regular weekend, even more so on Bridge Run weekend.
@carolinamom2boys, I don’t disagree that the hotels in the historic district may be more expensive, as is usual with a more desired location, although I would be very surprised if the Holiday Inn Express there would be double the price of the one on Spring St. In any case, my comment was in reply to her question about location.
@alwaysamom Are you referring to the Holiday inn on King Street in the Historic District ? OP is staying on Spring St( the crosstown) At least one other poster suggested a historic district hotel. The point of my post was hotels in the Historic District are typically more expensive , especially during the Bridge Run weekend , and often unavailable . I’m familiar with prices because I was also looking for a hotel in Charleston that specific weekend.
@thumper1 - Not sure when you arriving or the route you are taking. I suggest you go to bridgerun.com and check out the road and bridge closures on Saturday. Travel is most impacted Saturday morning.
@carolinamom2boys I believe the HI mentioned by someone earlier in the discussion is on Meeting St. I know that thumper is staying at the Spring St location. She indicated that the choice was made because it was closer to the venue of the wedding they are attending, which makes perfect sense.
@thumper1 I don’t know if your wedding events will take up the entire time of your visit but if you do have time, I highly recommend the Gibbes or one of the many small art galleries in town, and also the SC Aquarium (and particularly, the turtle hospital).
I want to run the Bridge Run so badly. I’ve run over the bridge on my own and it was an amazing run. I love that bridge. I also love Charleston in general and want to go back! I was at a conference at a hotel (Hotel Charleston?) right in the historic district. I loved walking around and running by the water in the early morning.
Thanks all. We will have four cars for the 8 people…so driving isn’t an issue. No one needs to drove int Charleston in the morning on Saturday.
When we made our reservations…both Holiday In. express locations were about the same cost…$350 for Satirday…and $150 for Sunday night. Reservation was made solely to be closer to wedding venue.
We don’t have a lot of “free time” most of us are arriving in Charleston on Saturday afternoon, and leaving Monday.
I’ll second the recommendation of The Vendue roof top bar. Outstanding view, including the bridge, good drinks and just steps from Magnolia’s. You’re in for a great time.
I agree about the roof top bar at The Vendue versus the bar at, say, Husk if atmosphere is the most important criteria.
Well…maybe we will head that way before dark. Our dinner reservation is pretty late…so we would probably be heading for drinks…and about 8:30.
You’re just going to have to plan a return visit to Charleston!
