Thanks, unalove! Looking forward to O-Week.

Ofolios or whatever are supposedly out by now. just letting you all know. I haven’t gotten mine yet, but yea…

Alright tengo una question.

It’s 3 quarters of the SAME language correct? Like let’s say I place out of 2 quarters of Arabic and 2 quarters of Spanish…I can’t be “done” I would have 1 quarter of either language left…right?

Correct. Though (I think) you can use the extra two quarters for elective credit… don’t quote me.

Yes, you could use the 2 extra credits as electives, as long as you don’t exceed the 6 credit marker for testing out of electives.

nice, but im pretty sure i already have those 6 eletives so…

are the RSO fairs on opening day of orientation?

nope, the RSO fair is Friday of first week (of school). That’s when everybody is back.

Opening Day is pretty intense, bagpipes and all.

i have 2 quick questions, thanx in advance:
when do we find out dorm assignments, and when do we select courses?

Dorm assignments arrive later in the summer, someone will be able to be more specific . You select courses toward the end of O-week after you have met with advisers and have the placement test results.

Dorm assignments: I think it was around Aug 10 last summer.

does U Chicago have time off for Thanksgiving each year? If so how many days off?

Technically, end of classes on Wednesday through Sunday.

My past two Thanksgivings I’ve had understanding teachers who allow the Wednesday as a “freebie” day (or I’ve been in larger classes where my presence isn’t essential and I had perfect attendance otherwise) so I’ve come home on Monday or Tuesday of that week. Getting out Wednesday is just too much of a pain.

Students can also opt to stay on campus and can eat at Hutch Commons-- or the house RH’s might put together a house meal. My friends who have stayed in for Thanksgiving have really liked staying, and they get to see their family a week or two after Turkey Day. (Thanksgiving falls on ninth week of a quarter that runs about 11 weeks).

For the past four thanksgivings, my D has had an understanding that she would attend classes on Wednesday.

In other words, she partook in the Wednesday rush.

Please do not think all teachers blow off half a week fall quarter. They do not.

thanks for the input. One last question - Chicago is on a quarter system, starts in September, when is the last day of class typically and do students resent being “out of synch” with the rest of academia?

My son had to be out of his dorm by 3pm last Saturday.

The biggest problem, I think, is summer jobs and internships. since some colleges start in August and end in late April or early May, their kids often have a small advantage.

Most kids seem to work through this, though, and enjoy the quiet days of early September when most other collegians are back at school.

My D found re-entry at home a little tough since her friends had already been back together for 4-6 weeks. Finals ended this year on June 13 and Fall Quarter classes start on September 29. It can be a little hard to find summer jobs for that calendar, but my S solved the problem the summer after his 3rd year by working in Chicago. With so many U of C and NU students, a lot of employers are used to the schedule!

thanks folks.
