@thumper1 Thank you for that clarification. My 26 yr old ds has returned to school and made under $20,000 working full-time last yr. His Pell grant did not even cover his $2000 tuition at the local CC bc of his expected contribution. He is continuing to work full-time while he goes to school, so he didn’t take out any loans. The OP’s comment about receiving $4000/month bc they were over 24 is what me respond.
@ibelta How is he going to pay for UCLA. If you are not in-state current residents of the state of CA, he will be charged out of state tuition. He will not qualify for need-based aid from UCLA.
That being the case, UCLA will cost you about $60000 a year…because you will need to also add transportation and health insurance to your costs. His Pell plus the Direct Loan won’t cover the cost to attend UCLA…at all.
It’s nice that he would “like to transfer” to UCLA…but that’s unrealistic unless you are residents of CA.
So…tell us…are you California residents??
If the Pell Grant currently covers all of you kiddo’s costs, it sounds like he is attending a community college and commuting from your home…is that correct? If that is the case, he needs to talk to the transfer advisor at his community college for suggestions with regard to transferring.
Be advised, getting accepted to a medical school in CA is perhaps THE most competitive state. Many many applicants who are qualified who are from the state.
Keep his undergrad debt as close to $0 as possible. Med school will be loans,
does it help any that he has very strong medical background, some certificate of excellence, lost of passion and amazing knowledge in the medical field (mainly trauma)? I am trying to get some positive indications here …
I thought you were wondering how other children in college would affect EFC?. At UCLA there won’t be any financial aid for an international/OOS student.
I’m assuming you are talking about Pierce College in L.A?
I agree with @mommdc . As a non-resident of CA, how would he pay to attend UCLA? The school doesn’t give need based aid to non-residents…and he is not a resident of CA for UCLA instate tuition purposes.
He is an OOS student for tuition purposes at UCLA…and OOS students at UCLA do not get need based aid. Not one dime.
Where do his parents live? If they don’t live in CA, he is not a resident of CA for UCLA tuition purposes. The info about that was posted upstream…and you agreed with it…noting “you are right”.
Read post 30…again.
ETA…as a U.S. citizen, your son can get the Pell Grant (maximum $6095) and the Direct Loan (sounds like he would be a junior…so $7500). Those will not cover the $65,000 costs for an out of state for tuition purposes student to attend UCLA.
