children in college abroad, how it affects EFC and Aid?

@Mom2aphysicsgeek

Once a student is independent for financial aid purposes, their undergrad Direct Loan amounts increase as well.

But this certainly isn’t “free money” and will have to be paid back!

If this kid already has a $0 EFC…his EFC can’t get any lower.

If the Pell is paying for his schooling now…what else do you want?

@thumper1 Thank you for that clarification. My 26 yr old ds has returned to school and made under $20,000 working full-time last yr. His Pell grant did not even cover his $2000 tuition at the local CC bc of his expected contribution. He is continuing to work full-time while he goes to school, so he didn’t take out any loans. The OP’s comment about receiving $4000/month bc they were over 24 is what me respond.

UCLA? Their Out Of State COA is $60K+ a year. They will not give any need based aid to OOS students.

He is would like to transfer to UCLA.

@ibelta How is he going to pay for UCLA. If you are not in-state current residents of the state of CA, he will be charged out of state tuition. He will not qualify for need-based aid from UCLA.

If he qualifies for Pell grant money, his COA would be approx $64,000 https://www.admission.ucla.edu/prospect/budget.htm minus Pell grant (approx $6000) = $58,000

@ibelta

You are not residents of CA, right?

That being the case, UCLA will cost you about $60000 a year…because you will need to also add transportation and health insurance to your costs. His Pell plus the Direct Loan won’t cover the cost to attend UCLA…at all.

It’s nice that he would “like to transfer” to UCLA…but that’s unrealistic unless you are residents of CA.

So…tell us…are you California residents??

If the Pell Grant currently covers all of you kiddo’s costs, it sounds like he is attending a community college and commuting from your home…is that correct? If that is the case, he needs to talk to the transfer advisor at his community college for suggestions with regard to transferring.

UCLA is a tough admit for ALL students.

He is would like to transfer to UCLA. He is a US citizen by birth and California Resident…

(We were in the US for long period of time on working visa supporting large company as part of a DOD project few years way back).

Since then we live abroad .

@ibelta

How does your kiddo qualify for instate status for tuition purposes in California if you live abroad.

Did your kiddo graduate from a CA high school?

It doesn’t matter if he was born in CA, if you move away you are no longer a resident.

wow you are right.
Any other university you suggest for medical pre-med studies in California?

Your kiddo can be a pre med major anywhere.

Be advised, getting accepted to a medical school in CA is perhaps THE most competitive state. Many many applicants who are qualified who are from the state.

Keep his undergrad debt as close to $0 as possible. Med school will be loans,

@WayOutWestMom your thoughts?

does it help any that he has very strong medical background, some certificate of excellence, lost of passion and amazing knowledge in the medical field (mainly trauma)? I am trying to get some positive indications here …

@ibelta

Does it help…for what?

He will need a strong MCAT score and a strong GPA to gain entrance into medical school…that and some health related experience, and decent LOR.

The costs will not be lowered based on his background or interests.

He is what…19 years old? What extensive experience does he currently have?

Regardless…admission to CA medical schools is HIGHLY competitive.

And the costs will be paid mostly by loans, loans and more loans…if he gets accepted to medical school.

Where is he currently attending? What is his major, GPA, and yr?

He is 22, Pierce College working on transfer later on to possibly MIMG at UCLA. If you you could send me private message I would appreciate it

I thought you were wondering how other children in college would affect EFC?. At UCLA there won’t be any financial aid for an international/OOS student.

He is not international student…unless you consider it due his parents non California residency

I’m assuming you are talking about Pierce College in L.A?

I agree with @mommdc . As a non-resident of CA, how would he pay to attend UCLA? The school doesn’t give need based aid to non-residents…and he is not a resident of CA for UCLA instate tuition purposes.

He is an OOS student for tuition purposes at UCLA…and OOS students at UCLA do not get need based aid. Not one dime.

Where do his parents live? If they don’t live in CA, he is not a resident of CA for UCLA tuition purposes. The info about that was posted upstream…and you agreed with it…noting “you are right”.

Read post 30…again.

ETA…as a U.S. citizen, your son can get the Pell Grant (maximum $6095) and the Direct Loan (sounds like he would be a junior…so $7500). Those will not cover the $65,000 costs for an out of state for tuition purposes student to attend UCLA.

what about if he will transfer at age 24 to UCLA?
