<p>But to be fair, nobody was a big a star as Gordie Howe. Even Wayne Gretzky thought Gordie Howe was really the Great One.</p>

<p>Biggest surprise for me so far- Nora Jones, did not know of the Ravi Shankar parentage. Music and athletics seem to be very strong hereditary attributes.
I would have to discount the Douglas acting family, as I don’t think Michael is anywhere near his dad talentwise, good but not transcendent.
Likewise Paloma I cannot regard in the same light as her dad.
But, Blythe Danner is equaled if not surpassed by Gwyneth.
The Peales and the Breughals, very strong art families.
Dylan, Guthrie and Lennon sons, not at the legendary level their dads attained.

<p>Perhaps the occurence of real genius is unlikely even within the same gene pool in a nurturing or otherwise enabling environment.</p>

<p>There are lots of talented families, particularly in the arts - John Raitt and his daughter Bonnie - but if you’re talking genius … no, not really. Bach’s kids were pretty good but they weren’t their old man. I can’t think of a great math genius whose progeny were nearly that way. Would you consider Marie Curie’s daughter? She won a Nobel with her parents but does anyone know her name or consider her in that class? There are a few other big father / son prize winners but those are much less well known than the Curies.</p>

<p>I also think that many geniuses are unsung, Edwin Krebs for example, was 74 when he was awarded the Nobel, and there are many scientists who are be working on parallel research at the same time as others, but we will never hear about it.</p>
<p>It makes for a nice bumpersticker to be a prodigy, but it also is pretty nice just to be a contributing member of society.

<p>this might have been mentioned, but bob dylans son is a fairly successful musician, mainly in the band the wallflowers. also in the realm of literature, the bronte sisters. also ernest hemingway’s granddaughter is a somewhat successful actress. i think the reason that artist’s children are not as good as them usually is that the spark of genius necessary for greatness is probably not genetic. in politics there is John Adams and John Q. Adams. also the huxley family (like aldous, author of brave new world) has many famous members.</p>
