choice of roommate?

Ditto Zaphod!

I spent four years in the same company in the same wing (post Plebe Summer), worked for me. All I wanted was a room in 8th wing overlooking the Bay senior year. Didn’t take much to motivate me.

the supe and the dant thought that having half of a company be new to the company each year was detrimental to company unity…since both plebes and youngsters would be new each year. i’m happy they don’t shotgun anymore.

I would think one swap, half-way through, would be ideal and help prevent separatist behaviors.

separatist behaviors?

If the companies aren’t shuffled, it is well known that the subcultures which develop among companies can actually be at odds with administation policies or even USNA values. Switching helps to even out the midshipman experience and also helps to keep attitudes in line with institute intentions.

Has Admiral Rempt written on the subject? Any links available?

i think that subcultures develop regardless of whether the companies are shuffled, i.e. 7th company was “Civilian 7” even when they were shotgunned (and consequently are not anymore), and 3rd company is the Third Reich now.

Sounds like maybe shuffling the leadership would be more effective than shuffling the masses if that is the case.
