quareidfaciam is right to warn you that your son’s interests may not have completely gelled yet. My son was all set to go to the University of Chicago (no engineering, period). At the last minute (end of April senior year) he decided he really wanted to study computer science within the context of an engineering school, so he chose a different university, one with a college of engineering that allows him to double major in non-engineering fields.

When he was deciding on which schools to apply to, he tried to cover a lot of bases: no tech, heavy tech, pure computer science, and multi-purpose universities with both engineering and liberal arts. It worked out well for him.
