Choosing between Loomis and Milton

The other advantage to day students is they often live somewhere with a garage/attic/basement/spare room where you can store your stuff over the summer instead of schlepping it back and forth to Bulgaria.

Yeah that is a great plus but, I am pretty sure we can also leave our stuff on campus. In both Loomis and Milton they have good storage areas, specifically in Milton. This is because once you get placed into a dorm house, you stay there.

I definitely recommend picking the school that feels like a good fit to you. Just to echo what others have said here, our DC has never felt unsafe around campus or on weekend trips to Boston. As for what the weekends are like at Milton, the school provides trips (i.e. shopping, movies, minigolf, ice cream runs, etc.) and events (i.e. dances, hypnotists, concerts, craft making) that are all included and just require signing up. Our child has not experienced being “bored” so much as being “too busy”. Very few boarding students go home over the weekend.

For dance, there are classes and many students participate in the winter dance concert which is a few month commitment and involves going to rehearsals to learn the choreography. The dance styles are truly international which makes for a very fun show. Students audition for the various dances and also to create the choreography. There are multiple dance classes at the school itself as well.

For visual arts, there is a beautiful art space (not sure if you saw it?). They have art shows each year within the school and work with practicing artists in the area. They have field trips to art shows and the MFA and after taking some introductory courses can take an advanced portfolio class. Here are some of the recent winners from the Scholastic Art competition, https://www.centreconnection.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Scholastic-Art-Awards-2023.pdf

For math, they have the standard up through linear algebra. There are students who start at pre-calc and then might do (pre-calc->calc->multi-variable calc->linear algebra)They have some incredibly bright students. Their math team has had a strong showing this year in the NEML (https://www.mathleague.com/downloads/hs2223/ne-hs6-2223.pdf) or Milton Math Team Achieves Perfection - Milton Academy.

Not sure if that helps, but just wanted to add. Good luck on your decision!

Congrats on two excellent acceptances!

My daughter had these two schools as her final choice as well (she chose Loomis) but they are both great places and you cannot make a wrong choice here. Please feel free to send me a DM if you have specific questions and congrats again!

Thank you! Yesterday I decided to enroll into Loomis and I think I will thrive better in that environment. I will see how it goes.

Congrats!! My daughter was a four year dancer at Loomis, so if you want to ask anything specific about the dance program, dance classes etc. let me know.

Loomis (and Choate) is within walking distance of a train line with frequent service to New Haven. While Hartford is mostly devoid of activity, New Haven ( the home of Yale and apizza) is thriving relatively speaking when it comes to culture, food options and shopping.

New Haven is a pretty gritty place. I know I wouldn’t feel comfortable with my teen walking around there alone or even with friends.

As this student has made their decision, I’m closing the thread.

Best of luck to the OP at Loomis!
