<p>I read that she had slight mental retardation, not sure if it was Downs syndrome or some other form. While she was clearly impaired, she could have been mostly self-sufficient and led a more rewarding life. At the time, they thought a lobotomy could cure this.</p>
<p>It’s a cautionary tale against trusting whatever the doctors say, especially when they advocate new therapies which sound like they could be dangerous. Removing part of someone’s brain logically carries a large risk. Of course, the Kennedys were known to be risk-takers…</p>
