I was doing my field work for my PhD during the 1998 outbreak in Urbana, and I had only been back in the USA for a few years. I started working pre dawn (in Allerton Park), and didn’t notice the slow buildup of noise until I realized that I could hear nothing else and that I had a huge headache.

I looked up in the tree that I was resting under and saw that is was full of cicadas. I looked around, and everything was full of cicadas, and the noise, as you wrote, was deafening.

We had last year’s outbreak, and we went out at night, hoping to find some teneral cicadas (still soft), since they are better for eating. Didn’t find any, but were treated to dancing fireflies in a dark meadow, surround by dark woods, and by a flying squirrel that shot past me to land on a tree some 10 feet away from me. So the night was a win.
