Thanks @guyk27.
Just so everyone knows, they also said at the brunch that theyāre pushing scholarship notification back to late March because of the snow.
That actually just jogged my memory ā there was some mention about regular housing is already full. I donāt know exactly what was said, but the impression Iām left with is that they still have honorās housing open.
My D applied for housing on 2/4. Honors housing in Turner was her first choice and she put 4 or 5 other choices as options also. Makes me nervous hearing that housing is full.
The way I understand it is if she applied on 2/4, she is high on the priority for the general assignment and would probably get her first choice. Honors will give her a chance to self select even before that, so I think you are fine.
Thanks @MyBjnk. I know the university has to reserve housing slots for freshman because they are required to live on campus. Being OOS, this mom feels like she does not have a feel for how things work at U of Cincinnati like I do for NC universities. Makes me worry more than I would if she was attending a NC public university.
We were at the Honors Brunch. The only thing I remember about anything possibly being āfullā was about Morgens and UPA apartment style housing is typically already filled with upperclassmen. There is no way an incoming freshman applying for housing on the first day it is available would not get in.
Okay, sorry about the misinformation (it was secondhand, of course) ā my wife definitely sent me a text that said one thing, but I checked with my son yesterday and he confirmed that it was Morgens that was mentioned, not the others.
By the way, I donāt know that Iād be so hot on the apartment-style living for this next year anyway ā my wife said they mentioned the Kroger on Vine St is undergoing renovation. Iām not sure where the nearest alternate grocery would be. Then again, could be that she messed up that message too :-).
Just saw notice posted online. Weāll see if snail mail arrives today too.
Does the notice tell the amount? Thanks!
Sorry @guyk27. Another question. Was the notice in an email or connected to the application? I want to message my D to check.
Hi @unc1957ā , amount(s) were posted. They were okay, but not as much as what Iād hoped (pretty close to $10k less than what MiamiU offered). Iāll post details later on.
A notice did not come through email. There is a special financial aid login, which you log into with the same user id and password as the application status login. I logged in yesterday and noticed they had posted amounts for āFederal Direct Subsidized Loansā, āFederal Direct Unsubsidized Loansā and āFederal Direct Parent PLUS Loansā, but nothing else was posted. My wife thought this was the āfinal offerā but that didnāt make sense to me, because our son received a letter that said heād be getting a Cincinnatus scholarship.
So I logged back in today, and it has listed the Cincinnatus amount, a Cincinnatus out-of-state additional amount, and a CEAS scholarship. As I said above, all of that was about $10k less than what MiamiU has offered. There is also the possibility of him receiving an alumni scholarship (both my dad and I attended, as did two of my siblings).
Iām not disappointed about any of this ā in fact, Iām very happy overall with how all of this is shaking out for him. He just has some difficult choices to make!
Thanks @guyk27! Good luck with your sonās decision-making!
My D found her information and sent me a text. She received a Cincinnatus award ($2,000) and the out-of-state Cincinnatus award ($3,000). She is attending the College of DAAP and did not receive a scholarship from them. She is also being considered for an regional alumni award, but that is a separate process. Hope to hear about that scholarship by the end of the month.
Thanks, too, @unc1957ā pretty much the same thing hereā¦Cincinnatus ($3k), Out of state ($3k) and CEAS ($4k). He also has applications in for the Demakes Alumni scholarship and the regional alumni scholarship. Maybe I should have been going to more regional alumni events the last dozen or so years :-).
One correction ā the CEAS scholarship is for just one year. They specifically call out co-op earnings in subsequent years as being the reason why the scholarship isnāt offered.
One part of the letter made me smile ā one of the signers of the letter was one of my professors, circa 1982-83. Heās now an associate dean of CEAS.
For those that received the CEAS Freshman award, would you mind listing your or your kidās credentials? I got the Cincinnatus University Scholars scholarship, but not the CEAS award w/ a 31 ACT, 4.4 GPA, top 5 class rank, all honors/AP curriculum, significant leadership/extra curricular/service, strong essay, etc. Just curious.
In my sonās case, he was 2090 SAT super-scored, 34 ACT, 4.5w/3.9uw GPA in an all-honors/AP curriculum, and he is 9th out of 375 in his class. National Merit Commended (and in another state would have been a semi-finalist!) Extra-curriculars? Kind of a lot of everything, including leadership in most. HS band(s), district festival bands, Eagle Scout, Model UN, significant volunteer experience and one year of a sport. His essay? Iāve read it and thought it was some of his best writing, but I have no perspective compared to others. Who knows if the CEAS panel even reads them?
So my son logged on and confirmed admission this morning. CEAS (Biomedical Engineering) Class of 2020. Heāll be able to log on and request housing in a couple of days. My wife tells me that heās already been on the accepted students Facebook page looking for a roommate.
