Clark Scholars 2010!

guys politics @ a college forum=not cool. The Chinese vs. Taiwanese thing is a Clark Scholar injoke where I take on the persona of a Chinese nationalist.

Just a trivia I learnt from my Clark Scholar mentor whose wife is Taiwanese: in a short period between Dutch and Japanese colonization, Taiwan natives formed the first modern republic in Asia. Go figure.

Also, my mentor and I chatted pretty often after we’re done with the routine work. He’s an incredibly cool person and I heard a few other mentors are the same. Before I went to Clark I have envisioned all the possible stereotypes of Texans but they’re pretty much all gone by the end of it =p

Let me clarify, their governments are communist and democratic.

This technically isn’t politics. If we were to get into that – well we’d be disscussing health care =/ - yep no politics for me.

An where I take on the perspective of a Canadian nationalist. :P

Yeah, my mentor sometimes rushed into the lab to show us some rather questionable jokes…

Exactly. No one even really has an accent, and people who say “all y’all” are made fun of.

Taiwan is a part of China.

First, Taiwan can’t survive without the help of China.
Second, Taiwan has always been a part of China.
Third, Americans need to get out of other people’s business. China and Taiwan are like arguing brothers, but it’s annoying when some outsider bugs into a family feud.

^Actually, Taiwan was occupied by aboriginal peoples long before the political entity of China (let alone the PRC) existed. But this thread is about Clark Scholars.

"First, Taiwan can’t survive without the help of China. "

They’d be better off w/o any “help”.

But again, this thread is about Clark Scholars. You know, that summer program that some folks around these parts applied to?

Does Clark Scholars accept updates? I won an award today that I’d like to update them about.

You can always try. I’m sure they won’t go like “lalalalala I can’t hear you!”

I know this has probably been asked before, but what is the acceptance rate to Clark Scholars? How hard is it to get in?

^Can’t predict for this year, but pretty low, and pretty hard. Expect it to be competitive. Good luck, everyone!

When do we get notified if we are accepted into the program?

Please read the thread first (e.g. page 22). This question has been asked numerous times. Decisions are released in mid-April.

@bks85 you can definitely update them on awards and such. I did last year and I probably think it helped my admission to the program. good luck!

@m.sides, Thanks! I did and she seemed receptive about it! Looking forward to seeing the decisions come out!

@bks58, did you call them or email?

Probably email is better, because people tend to forget things if they don’t have them in writing, and it’s not like Dr. San Fran and Ms. Durham can really just sit at their desks waiting for application update calls. You could try calling, but an email update would probably be better.

You see, I’ve emailed her several times (well twice) on the status of my transcript, but I never got a reply. I’m sure I sent it to the right mail. Oh well, its probably resting in her junk folder right now.

Would it be beneficial at all if I sent my abstract from a previous research project?

^^Then try calling, I guess, just to make sure.
^Well, you can at least try…
