***Class Of 2015 NMSF Qualifying Scores***

brother has 213.

Ok, another question. If the NMSF cut off is determined by state, why is there a flat cut off at the national level for commended students? Why aren’t there state cut offs for commended students as well, which reflect the state NMSF cut offs? Conversely, if there is a national cut off for commended students, why isn’t there a national cut of NMSFs?

@xcrunner2011…Based on what the kids were told at our school, you/your child should be a SF. Congrats!! Please remember that although the data we got this morning is fairly firm…nothing can be considered completely “official” until you either get the SF notification letter from your school or you call NMSC on Wed, Sep 10th (the public release date for info) and they’ll confirm the status for you over the phone.

@DrMom68…Because Commended status recognizes the top 50,000 scorers in the entire country, while Semifinalist status recognizes the top .5% in each of the 50 states.

Wolverine, sure hope you aren’t writing all this from a cockpit…

Does anyone know if PSAT scores are usually included on a student’s official high school transcript along with their SAT scores?

I imagine that ^^ depends on each school. Not all schools put SAT scores on transcript - my D’s school does not.

I get that Wolverine, but my question is WHY are there two different methodologies employed, state cut off for NMSF and national for (ahem) National Merit commended student status

^^ No they are not

thanks, that’s what I thought. I was surprised to see them on there.

Thank you wolverine for correcting my post. It should say I have no information on the IL state cutoff.

@celesteroberts…I can multi-task. ^:)^

@DrMom68…I guess it’s purely statistical. They want to make sure the equivalent PERCENTAGE of graduates are recognized in each state versus giving all but a handful of recognition to the high population states. No matter how they allocate things, somebody is going to think it’s unfair. That’s truly the crappy part about it.

@Wolverine86, thank you so much for all your helpful posts in the thread…your reward of chicken wings is in the mail! And congratulations to your DD on NMSF!!

Just received my son’s AP Scholar w/Distinction Award certificate in the mail - a rainbow of sorts in my hailstorm!

In FL and my daughter just got called down to guidance. She is one of 12 NMSF’s at her school. They were told that the cutoff is 211 in FL, so I am just confirming that for anyone in FL who hasn’t heard yet. Good luck to all!

@greatfallsmom‌ – Grats to your son! I hope things work out in his favor for the NM too. Still a possibility it sounds like.

I can understand your frustration over the state by state cutoffs. But, this seems consistent with the way other matters are handled in our nation. I think we have an interesting balance of national vs state in our country (thinking of electoral college among other things). I hope whatever happens, we call all extend good wishes to the students across the nation who progress to nmsf.

My daughter appears to have been misinformed by her classmate - according to a counselor, the DC cutoff is 224 again this year. I apologize greatly for earlier misinformation, and any stress caused parents or students!

@mdmommy4‌ Thanks so much for letting me know officially what trickled out yesterday through a student. He had the flu this year, but last year as a sophomore he scored a 230 and would have beaten the cut off then, so we know he probably could have gotten that one extra point this time if he didn’t have a temperature and sore throat while taking the exam. The positives for me to stress to him is that he did great on his SATs, APs and grades, and that he has lots of choices regardless. Congrats again to your daughter!

By the way, my son just a few minutes ago got an email from Carleton College, so not sure those mailing tie into NMSF scores!!
