I agree. Give them a call. I called a month ago to make sure all was in order and didn’t ask about confirming scores and the rep mentioned how 1960 was the cutoff, but if it’s causing you stress I think it’s best if you hear it from them directly.

@momtimes3…Whomever your other source of info was, they are COMPLETELY wrong. The qualifying SAT score for the Class of 2015 participants is once again 1960, calculated by M+CR+(10 x Writing MC sub-score). I confirmed this personally with NMSC on 10 Sep, and when I called to confirm my D2’s SAT score had been received by NMSC they specifically said “Yes we have it and it exceeds the confirming score of 1960”. Verbatim.

I have been confused by this: M+CR+(10 x Writing MC sub-score). My S does not have a writing MC sub-score. I thought I had signed him up for SAT with writing but maybe that did not take place? The math score is harsh; he only missed one question out of 49 and got a score of 710.

Ahhh, never mind, I figured it out. He missed one question out of 48 on Writing and got a 710; his subscore though is 78, so 10 x that is 780.

@1203southview…Glad you found the sub-score. You have to dig down a little into the score report to find the MC sub-score online, but for most of the students it benefits them to use the sub-score x 10 versus their Writing score when looking to make the 1960.

Thanks Wolverine86. I had a moment of panic this morning when I thought that he took the wrong test, without writing! I started looking at last dates to sign up to retake the SAT in November before I figured it out.

The SAT always has writing. Only the ACT gives you options (at this time anyway, changes are coming!) Wow on the math score. In the very recent past, one wrong was still 750 or higher. 710 seems extremely low to me. Maybe 5 years ago, you could have 3-5 wrong, and still top 700.

For the one that counts, my son’s actual writing score and his sub-score times 10 are identical.

I agree, 710 for one wrong seems really harsh.

Okay, I am finally sending my son’s SAT scores to NMSQT. I have never sent an SAT score anywhere before. My S took the SAT last weekend so I have 4 free score reports. When I send to NMSQT, will I be sending all of his SAT sitting scores, or am I only allowed to send only the one he took October 11th for free? Thanks.

Sorry, that was my error, PAMom21. It was the writing category where he only missed one question out of 48 and got a 710, not the math.

Okay, and that was more for the essay, since the MC score was 78. That makes sense @1203southview .

@veggylover…We’ve never used the free score reports before, but from the College Board website

so that leads me to believe you can send only the most recent score if you choose.

I was completely anal about every step in the process after my oldest got a good score for the class of 14. I pestered the principal (nicely) to ensure his letter was written, I pestered the counselor (nicely) to make sure his grades were submitted and I double checked with the nice folks at national merit to be sure his file was complete. I had this nightmare of him missing out due to some paperwork glitch. I bet they get calls from nervous parents all the time.
The good news- Oldest son is a NMS and a happy freshman on full ride
The bad news- Younger son took the test last week. Hopefully here we go again.

OK, silly question. Where did everyone put National Merit Semi-finalist on the common application? Did you put it under activities? And, as best as my son knows, there is only space for 10 activities, so that alone takes one spot???

My D put it under the “Honors” section since this is really not EC and it is part of academic achievement

under “Honors” section, national level.

OK just found out my son already had it there, I just didn’t know it. Maybe I need to stay out of this. :)

Actually, son told me it says you should put the honor a state level and not national level because everyone has a different cut depending on where you live.

When will the kids hear about finalist status?

From the NMSC Semifinalist paperwork:

I believe the Semifinalists that do not make Finalist have received notification by the end of January in the past.
