little concerened here as unifieds comes round the bend … I’m starting to start throwing other applications against the wall to see what sicks.
Ugh. She’s not concerned … but I am! AARRGhgh!
Millikin called her tonight to remind her to apply for their honors college -but there’s no way she’ll be going to Millikin after the way they treated her after her audition. (Or rather, the “lack” of treatment.) I’m quite sure some legalities had come into play but just a nice personal note wishing her health would’ve gone a LONG way. (For the record she was finally cleared for weigh bearing activity on 1/19. Whew.)
The Community Production of Les Mis is rolling along nicely - she was originally cast to understudy EIGHT women (EEEK!) but was told yesterday on stage that good things come to people with good attitutdes and that she will be on stage after all. (She was in tears!)
We have no Yes’s … just one Maybe from a school she really likes.
Sigh.
This was SO much easier when my STEM kid opted for ED1 last year!
KaMaMom, send me a pm. I have some suggestions. It’s not to late to add some schools and auditions, if you are interested. I tried to pm you, but it didn’t work.
I’ve been thinking about posting this now that audition season (and emotions!) are ramping up … because I know I’m not the only one.
There are LOTS of insanely talented legit triple-threats here on CC … it’s a magnet! And I’m always in awe of your kids and proud too … kinda like I know them, but not really.
My daughter didn’t pass a single pre-screen. (GASP!) And I guess that it’s entirely possible that she could be shut out of all of her upcoming BFA MT auditions as well.
And if that happens, she’ll major in theatre and take tons of voice & dance lessons on the side. She won’t die. She probably won’t even cry (she’s a tough cookie that one) but I probably will.
So basically, here’s why I wanted to post this … for every one of us posting there is most likely a hundred lurkers (did I shoot too high? perhaps) getting depressed and becoming really good friends with cheesecake.
And especially if there is a kid reading this who isn’t getting the best feedback in your prescreens - don’t despair! You’re not alone!! Stay the track and do what you love … the rest will fall into place.
Perhaps my daughter won’t end up on Broadway (though I do have a vague idea of what MY Tony dress will look like), maybe she’ll be a voice actress, maybe she’ll manage a small playhouse, maybe she’ll take a turn and fall in love with theatre tech or maybe, just maybe (though I sincerely doubt it) she’ll end up as Elle Woods without the singing and dancing.
I do know that performing will be in her life forever … just as it’s always been. She can’t imagine doing or being anyone else.
So know that Ticsch doesn’t know everything, U of Michigan doesn’t have the lockdown on the best of the best, and not getting into BoCo doesn’t mean that you should rethink your life goals. (Though Lindsey Mendez - THE Lindsey Mendez - once told my daughter that if you wake up one morning and wonder, ‘huh, I wonder what it would be like to be an attorney’ GO BE THAT ATTORNEY because to do, to be in this crazy life, you have to be so secure in your life path that you never question it.)
@KaMaMom - Don’t give up hope! Sometimes for whatever reason, some people just don’t shine in their prescreen videos. But maybe they will in their in-person auditions. There are lots of great programs out there and one of them will recognize your talented D!
But if you want to add schools to what list she is already considering, I have recently heard of some programs that I am not that familiar with, but that someone at my Ds high school who is a few years behind us, has researched and really loves - in fact they are now attending one of these and have already been in many shows as a freshman. So you may want to look at:
Southern Indiana University
Southern Illinois University
Ohio Wesleyan
Emory and Henry
Catawba
Western Kentucky University
These are not programs that are talked about here, but she was very impressed with all of them for many reasons. I think most are theater programs rather than musical theater (although Western KY has a BFA in MT) Just some ideas if you want to consider other schools.
@vvnstar … she auditioned at SIU and is waitlisted there. She loves it - hopefully it will come together that way!
But yes, we’ve known forever and a day that she’s an “in person” auditioner! lol! We knew it going in that pre-screens were going to be tough.
Thanks for the additional options!
This is the kid who wakes up on the right side of the bed every day … she has the best attitude of anyone I’ve ever met. No matter how this shakes out, she’ll make it shine.
Every happiness study I’ve seen says that resiliency is an even better predictor of ultimate happiness than being admitted to CMU, UMich, Northwestern AND CCM, so I agree she will land on her feet, smiling!! Congratulations on raising a great human!!
@KaMaMom, I already have a story about a friend of my D’s who did not pass any prescreens, but just got an offer almost immediately after the audition to an excellent BFA MT school! Keep your chin up…you’ve considered the worst case scenario and determined it’s not the end of the world…your D’s attitude and positivity will take her far. Just say NO to the cheesecake! Ha!
@KaMaMom, your post made me emerge from my mostly lurker status!! My daughter has big Broadway dreams but is exclusively applying to BA MT programs because she wants to study other subjects too… Sometimes when I read CC (which I love to do!) I worry that maybe she wont make it bc she is not even considering the big schools. However, I’ve come to believe there area ton of factors that combine with schooling, like drive, tenacity, luck, etc, so there is no reason to feel like it is over by any means. This is just the beginning of their journey and when I worry to some of my friends they say “she is only 17! Now is the time for her to dream!”
My D is the same as yours @SJBmab and I too worried that she was making a mistake. They are not making a mistake. They are following their path and will have so much to bring to their acting as they learn and explore the intellectual world around them. There is no one path even though CC might sometimes (inadvertently) make us feel like there is!
We are not the only one’s having these types of discussions. Two of my four kids are pursuing MT as careers. I have the same discussions and concerns for all of them. I also like stats, facts, and figures to put things in perspective about college and about careers:
[QUOTE=""]
About 80 percent of students in the United States end up changing their major at least once, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. On average, college students change their major at least three times over the course of their college career. (NCES)
Career change statistics suggest that the average person will be making a career change approximately 5-7 times during their working life. With an ever increasing number of different career choices on offer, about 1/3 of the total workforce will now change jobs every 12 months. By the age of 42 you will probably already have had about ten jobs. (DOL)
This was a major reason we were pleased when D decided to apply ED to a BA program at an academically strong university. As it turned out, her commitment to a career in MT remained unwaivering through college, but a lifetime is long and a second major never hurt anyone.
Or, if D’s professional MT career to-date is any indication, if you’re an actor in 2 years you will have had at least 10 jobs.
