Class of 2019 (the journey begins) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

Hey @wearecollege, i hope pgh airport freezes and you’re stuck here with the rest of us! Its only minus 12 tonight.
Your D gonna make it back on the 1st for American Idiot callbacks?

On the counselors - this makes me laugh now, but at the time was infuriating: We went in for our scheduled “preparing for college applications” meeting & D had to explain to the college counselor the difference between a BA and a BFA. I was speechless!!! Needless to say she was no help. We are in a top ranked school system with almost 100% rate of graduation & college attendance, but VERY few of them go through this crazy process. It had been a couple of years since anyone had done it. The counseling office thought she was insane applying to so many schools!

When S went through this last year, one of his teachers - the math teacher/football coach combo - was “extremely disappointed” in S even though he had the highest grade in class. S asked him, very matter-of-factly: “if this was an absence related to Football, would you be disappointed?” Pretty soon, the form was signed.

Just a reminder that schools value athletic absences, and to make sure they understand that BFA auditions are essentially like playing 15+ away games in our “season”, just you’re playing yourself and it’s probably an out of town game (this sports metaphor is going downhill…)

My S attended a public PA high school. The latest in the long line of ever-changing counselors had zero experience getting kids into arts colleges - let alone BFAs. Really felt sorry for the other seniors whose parents never lurked on CC. S got notice of truancy for too many college visits, but as with many things at that school they never got around to telling him when to show up for Saturday school.

@pghmusician American Idiot! If my S had a chance to audition for that he would cancel his other audition. That’s his favorite show. I didn’t even know if was available to license.

Yeah, he’s pretty stoked about it. And we did rearrange some later auditions for it.
Licensing locations listed here: http://www.mtishows.com/show_detail.asp?showid=000436

A plug for The D’s school. The American Idiot collegiate premiere was at Shenandoah! Prior to that, I believe, it was only in NYC and on tour.

@GSOMTMom Is she in the current production “best lil whorehouse…” ? Divamamacita & I will be there this weekend,

She is! She’s one of the ladies of ill repute. LOL

@pghmusician, we are having our callback the next day because when it was canceled last weekend, I immediately called to remind them of these auditions, which of course cannot be changed and have been scheduled since Oct/Nov. Still considering changing the plane ticket to be back for Sunday AM but it’s a very expensive penalty. It’s over March 1, it’s over March 1, it’s over March 1, ohmmmmm
Plus I have tickets to see their student show Saturday night.

Since we are all waiting at this point here is a question for all of you:
In your own opinion (of course) what “type” of student do MT programs lol for? I mean the “different” types of programs seek (as a rule of thumb or “word on the street/it’s been my experience”). CCM seems to look for “X” type, etc…

MT newbie: I will tell you what my D’s department chair told a group of parents and kids once. He asked the kids what they thought they looked for. Some said voice, some dance, some acting. He said no to all of those. Talent he said was a given; for my D’s year they auditioned 900 kids for 40 spots in theater and MT. Out of that pool they know they’ll get talent.

What he told the kids is what they look for first are smart kids and good kids. They need smart kids to handle the academics and the pace of training, and becasuse first they are a university and you have to fulfill the minimum admission requirements. Then they want good kids. His point was they have to work with you for four years, as do the other studuents. They don’t need divas, they don’t want to deal with divas. He told the kids there were times they would cross a student off the list just because of the attitude shown to the accompanist.

Agreed! Nice kids they know they can work with and will work well with others.

And I totallly agree with that! Being respectful and nice doesn’t mean you aren’t competitive. It means you are a good person! I guess I should be more specific. I am wondering if each program is more known for a certain student (classically trained voice, amazing ballet dancer, belter, etc). Not holding anyone to anything just opinions.

Generalizations about schools can be dangerous. I know for example BoCo has a strong dance aspect. However, if you are a phenomenal singer, I would bet you would be accepted even if your single is sloppy. Michigan (and Elon) say they are looking for two out of three. In other words strength in two areas. Doesnt really matter which two. So I think this question is likely to elicit some misleading info.

I also believe the standards are different for boys. Just my own opinion. A boy who can sing can literally have two left feet and be admitted to lots of schools, even schools that emphasize dance, whereas usually with girls, they can find someone that sings AND has something else. Esp. true at the top programs I would say. But again, if your voice is phenomenal, you are going to get some acceptances even if your dance is not strong.

I get that there are a lot more girls than boys, but holy smokes…it is still insanely competitive for the boys…just sayin’

@tmygirl I am not saying it isnt competitive for boys. Just saying its less of a “problem” if a boy has two left feet as opposed to a girl. He still has to show strong skill in the other areas.

Regarding grades among MT auditioners - here is some data on Musical Theatre students who participated in a fairly large regional audition where I worked as a volunteer (there were several dozen students in this group):

GPA 3.5 or above (unweighted) = 50%

SAT/ACT 1800/26 or above = 35%

Students that met both criteria = 27%

Top 10% of class = 32%

Students that met all criteria = 18%

From this data set, high stats students seem to be fairly common among MT auditioners.

@EmsDad That’s much much higher than I would have guessed. Does this regional audition include private and public schools, and what region of the country. “Several Dozen” Is this sample more than 100? Was it diverse in terms of socioeconomic levels and racial diversity. Was there an entrance fee? You’ve peaked my curiousity!

The sample is less than 100.

The audition is open to all schools and draws students from 100 miles or more away, but this group only included students from public schools (private school students seem to be a rarity at these auditions, even though there are many private schools in the area).

Southwest region of the country, no entrance fee for students.

The group was relatively diverse socioeconomically, and significantly more ethnically diversified than Unifieds and on-campus groups that I observed this year. Two-thirds came from suburban high schools.

The group was about 1/3 guys and 2/3 dolls*.

The auditions are very well attended by colleges.
