Class of 2021 (sharing, venting, etc)

So it looks like Elon was true to the date it posted for MT Acting notifications…I guess that means we really won’t hear on MT decisions until Jan. 18th…I was hopeful we would hear earlier. We need to firm up travel plans…I just want to move on, it is the last school we are waiting on.

@marg928 - yes, I see that now. NP, my S put a prescreen in for Elon MT, we are the unfortunate ones that have to wait one more month for his results, ugh.

I am an acting mom so if you have any questions I would be happy to answer. I try and go to both forum and answer when I can.

Since we’ve started a trend in the conversation, I have an acting program question for the experts here. Do any of you know of MT students who have gone to Evansville? Any MT kids who chose an acting program over MT program?

@MTTheaterMom- my kid applied to both MT and Acting programs 3 years ago, and was accepted to both. In the end, for BFAs, it came down to Syracuse MT, and NYU Acting - and she chose NYU.

@MTheaterMom my D has a friend who is a Freshman at Evansville. I know that her major is theater-related, but I don’t recall if it’s acting, general theater, etc. I will ask. She has another friend who transferred out after 2 years, and her high school theater drama head is a graduate. MT kids who study acting seems to happen a lot…for lots of reasons. If you have any specific Evansville questions, PM me and I will try to get you an answer.

I have kids in both MT and Acting so I hang out in both forums. Acting does tend to be quieter. @GloriaVaughn good to know the seniors had fair warning. It’s just surprising no official action was taken before senior year. It is an expensive lesson - for both student and likely the parents.

@MTheaterMom - not to beat a dead horse but UNCSA is a “straight” acting program and one many MT kids apply to and choose as the training is all encompassing. Obviously acting is the focus but kids still take 4 years of dance, voice, etc. Looking at intensive arts weeks videos Online and you can see the great dance training they get.

I may be remembering wrong but I think CMU has acting majors take dance and voice too. Just less than MT majors.

The kids we know at Evansville enjoy it. But I am under the impression it does not offer much in terms of MT.

Some schools such a Southern Methodist offer a BFA in acting with an MT minor. However I have learned they do not do musicals (at least not guaranteed). That may be a good question to ask acting programs - do they do musicals and if so how often. Looking into the actual curriculum online may also help to know how much (if any) voice and dance is offered.

Many MT kids choose acting programs for many different reasons.

My D is a MT kid, but auditioned for the BFA Acting degree at Otterbein this year because it is such an integrated program. She will get the deeper acting courses, but she will still get to dance every day and she will get some voice as well. They offered her a spot that day, so she is done auditioning!!

we should have to treads MT class 2021 and T class of 2021 I agree to confusing !

I will start a thread in the other forum as well…

@artskids, they have hurtles to pass every year. They do or should have some advanced idea as to how they are doing. They learn every part of theatre. Example: they learn costumes. Student A is assigned to sew white name labels into white shirts. Taught to thread a needle and knot the thread and how to make small stitches. Student A does the task, a neat job but uses black thread. Student B is assigned to put thread on bobbins. Shown how to start the thread, and use the machine to put the thread on the bobbin. Students B says “can’t you do it for me? I’ll never have to do this”. Guess which student passed the hurdle? Yep, student A. Student B would have had the opportunity to do another round in the costume shop in order the pass the hurdle. If they failed a second time, then they are redirected to another part of theatre or another major.

Here’s the new thread…please add your two cents!

@marg928 - a thread on the theater forum is great - and I see you got the ball rolling. But these forums have always been symbiotic (in the 4 years I have been following them)- don’t stress about where you post … if someone has a question, they should ask for clarification. What I have found in past years is that you get to know the “regulars” and then things fall into place. New people may be confused, but they’ll figure it out soon enough!

Thanks @toowonderful that’s why I began posting here and will probably continue to!

@theatremom16 congratulations to you and your daughter. How nice to be done with the process already. My D is a freshman design/tech theater student at Otterbein, and she loves it.

So apparently, I am the only person in my S’s life that is telling him that it is a real possibility that he won’t get into any of his top 6 programs (all highly competitive reaches), and maybe not even his top 10 choices. Teachers, peers, tutors etc. everyone is telling him how there’s no way he won’t get in to one or more of these top programs (CMU, CCM, NYU, BOCO, etc). I so much would rather just be the person in his corner that says, “You’ve totally got this” instead of the person saying “You’ve got to be prepared for only getting into your safety school (Muhlenberg) and maybe one other school that at the bottom of your list.”

No one knows how difficult this is until they’re in the middle of it. Best of luck to your son, though, and to you for being his rock during the whole thing.

@MomofMTBoy, a lot of well-meaning people have inflated, unrealistic ideas of the chances of getting into top programs. This is especially true if they’re not plugged into the ‘scene’. Sorry you had to be the bad guy for your son, but you do what you have to do. And hopefully he’ll get into one of the schools anyway!

@MomofMTBoy I’m always stressing to my D that she simply doesn’t know where she will get in. And I’m always telling other people the reality of the statistics when they say “oh she’ll get in”. That’s why I got annoyed with her for not wanting to audition for Elon after passing the pre-screen. She let a few schools go as a matter of fact due to not getting the supplements in on time (Penn state and Michigan) plus she didn’t pass two pre-screens…that was a reality check! I’m like you…I was never that parent that said “you can do anything” because that’s not real life. I’m very practical. I tell her she’s talented and her coach thinks she has a really good shot of getting into a reach school but I’m always the one telling her she should do her best but know that when a school takes 12 kids out of 1000 the chances are simply not in anyone’s favor, no matter how talented. As a parent, you’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t!
