The school you go to is only part of the equation. The rest is up to the student. Some kids don’t work as hard as others and some make bad choices within their programs. Don’t overlook the schools no one talks about on this forum. Michigan, CMU, CCM are all great programs, but aren’t neccessarily the best choices for everyone and in no way guarantees any success.
@artskids I feel you! My third who wants to audition for BFA is a 10th grader–almost time for that rollercoaster to start again…
I am so glad I only have to do this once. Once is enough!
It’s my second time in a sense…D21 is a dance major but I have to say this is MUCH harder! First of all there are not nearly as many BFA Dance programs as there are theater programs…and you don’t need a coach or to memorize monologues! Yes, there were supplements and auditions but it just wasn’t nearly this stressful or time consuming.
Hi everyone!
I’m currently a BFA MT at one of the “top 10 programs” and I’m looking to transfer! I’m getting started in this process really late since its almost the end of December so I’m not really sure what my options are. Is there anyone that transferred into Pace MT that I can talk to?
@GSOMTMom’s D went through the transfer process a few years ago. She didn’t end up at Pace, but she may have some insights to share.
@letmesingforyou9 of course we all want to know WHY! My oldest D is a Senior at Pace as a Commercial Dance major. There is not much interaction between the dancers and actors so I can’t help you unfortunately.
Can anyone tell me if FSU goes to Unified? or do you need to audition on campus???
@lincoln56 All BFA MT auditions are on campus this year.
The best thing about this process is the amount of time you will get to spend with your child. Parents with kids applying to traditional schools don’t get that. It is a wonderful time. Auditioning is fun. If you can, try to drop your kid off and go for a walk. Don’t be the parent that is staring at the window of the dance audition. Don’t be the parent telling everyone how many shows your child has been in and don’t get sucked into conversations with other parents about their kids’ credits. It doesn’t matter. I know plenty of kids that have Broadway/professional credits that did not get into top 10 schools. My d’s roommate had only ever done two high school shows and had no professional training or a coach. She is very talented but did not have access to other opportunities. The only thing that matters is what happens in the room and what the school needs to fill in the gaps in their program. They are building a company. If they already have 5 kids of one type they are not looking for another one. Your child could be off the charts talented and still not get an offer.
Also, advise your child to ignore anything said in the room. After paying 7k for my D to attend a summer program and having one of the instructors write a letter of recommendation, here is what my D was told at the end of her audition, “See you in the fall!.” She didn’t even make the wait list. My point is that there is no sense to any of this and you can’t predict/understand/count on anything. Your child WILL get in somewhere and most likely end up very happy, so try to enjoy the ride.
^^very well said!
My D’s application to Michigan was deferred for further consideration. Can anyone chime in on this? It’s not due to academics, I’m guessing it might be common for students to get deferred who still have to audition? Why would you give an academic offer to a student who is only going to attend IF they pass an audition and are offered a spot in the program. Otherwise if they make academic offers to all the MT and Acting kids who do “qualify” academically, it could create a huge gap in the freshman class come April if they aren’t offered spots in the program. Is my thinking right? Or am I rationalizing (irrationally) about the deferral?
@followurheart question did you pass the prescreen and do you have an audition date? We didn’t here anything from Michigan till after our audition. Try not over think anything.
@followurheart You are only offered a admittance to Michigan if you are accepted into the MT department. At some schools you are offered another major or can attend for Liberal Arts. You also are not offered a spot to audition if you do not pass the academic hurdle.
@followurheart my D just checked her portal and it says the same-deferred. So yes, it must be the “limbo” they will be in until artistic decisions are made,
@ducky312 lol! I’m over thinking everything! Easier said than done, but good advice nonetheless.
My D said she applied early action and at Michigan she applied as a bfa acting only. She has an audition date at unifieds confirmed, but not a time. They said they would confirm a few weeks prior with a time. We have three friends with kids at Michigan right now and I called one of them this morning, they did not receive anything like this either, but they did not apply early action. Thanks for the response.
Thanks owensfolks for having her check, it makes sense.
My D got academic acceptances from all of the big universities before she auditioned. Then when she didn’t get in to MT they bombarded her with letters and phone calls to attend anyway. Very annoying.
Some schools do the full court pressure to attend anyway. Some don’t offer the opportunity. Just depends
Okay, here’s my vent! I adopted my D as a single parent and I am filling out another financial aid application that asks these kinds of questions: Are the student’s parents married to each other? (I have no idea, maybe?) Select “No” if the parents are divorced or separated from each other. I can choose Yes or No. Next question: Are the student’s biological or adoptive parents unmarried and living together? (No, because there never were adoptive parents, just parent!) I’ve answered these questions in several variations - I can’t be that small a minority, can I?
