Class of 2021 (sharing, venting, etc)

We had a very positive audition experience at CMU - matter of fact it was the BEST audition experience out of all the auditions so far (other than American which my D said was very fun). I have no problem with them or any other college not pre-screening and really who cares if they audition 3000 kids? If your kid auditions they have just as good as a shot as anyone else, even if the acceptance rate is small. I know for a fact that polished talent doesn’t automatically mean your kid is going to get into a top tier school. I know of two local kids who worked extensively in local/regional theatre, always had leads, trained in NYC had fantastic voices and didn’t get into top tier colleges. My D’s acting coach has mentioned about kids coming in “too polished” and many colleges want to train kids their way. Not saying that is good or bad - and knowing that acceptance into CMU is like winning the lottery they still took the time, at least with my D to really spend some quality time with her when she auditioned on campus. That was worth the price of the hotel, gas money and audition fee!

@toowonderful, I don’t think anyone is faulting a school for charging money. I was pointing out that there was the additional cost of the audition fee.

@GSOMTMom - don’t most (if not all) schools with an audition charge an audition fee?

@missnypizza My D also received a BA offer at BSU and was so disappointed. It was also her second audition back in November and since then she changed all of her music. She was very bitter but now that her auditions are pretty much done and we are waiting on multiple schools she has said that this will be her safety. We have a household of people trying to keep her busy while we wait. It’s really starting to get to everyone, my husband included.

I believe Juilliard auditioned around 2100 this year. That’s based on a tweet I saw from an auditionee. And that’s for a class of 18.

I’m wondering… did anyone receive an acceptance from Ball State BFA yet? A friend of ours also auditioned and he has NOT received the alternate email we all received. I’m thinking that’s a GOOD sign for him. Do y’all think that’s a safe assumption?

@KPike320 my D has received nothing yet from Ball State - can’t be a bad sign!

I would definitely take that as a sign!!

@momadrama has she received any other acceptances yet?

We have been waiting for Ball STate too! Does anyone know how many audition for them? I know they have one more audition date.

@audrone --good info. Also- for juilliard, half of their 18 are MFA students. So that is only about 9 BFA kids.

There is at least one Ball State BFA offer out, it was on the list of MTCA kids yesterday. I have otherwise only heard BA/BS offers and no flat out no’s

This talk of audition fees at CMU makes me smile. Back in the olden days when my D applied, I believe CMU’s audition fee was $40. They were the only school on her list that charged an audition fee. When she got into Tisch E.D., we cancelled the CMU audition and I’m still waiting for the refund on that audition fee!

We have a friend who auditioned for ball state acting and he got an email saying they were still interested or considering him etc something to that effect. Not sure how the acting differs from mt in offers etc.

Also interesting there were no UNCSA acceptances this week on the MTCA list. @Janine1 your D was very fortunate to get a call so early!

That’s funny! My how times have changed. How is your daughter doing now after being at Tisch? That’s my d’s dream school.

I’m curious to know how others are paying for these enormously expensive colleges. It seems no matter what school we’re looking at, the good ones leave us with a deficit of about $25k. Is anyone else feeling this?? Or am I the only one wondering which kidney to sell to pay for her first year?

We have no idea how we are going to pay if she gets in anywhere!

@KPike320 you have a very valid concern…but from my vantage point, speaking today…that is a problem I would like to have. We are still circling the airport waiting for offers.

There’s one boy with a yes for CCM, for those of you keeping score. My D’s friend. Don’t know when he got the call, but they are together on a school trip.
