For anyone waiting on University of Miami…My D is a member of the Green Room on facebook. She said the portal has a message waiting for some kids, that needs to be opened in Google Chrome, which is the decision as to which program they got into.
My D doesn’t have a message yet, so we are still waiting, but hopeful.
@MTMomof2 - I’m not sure what makes you think kids can’t study MT if they are not in a BFA program. My D is currently a freshman at Wagner in their theatre performance program (MT) - it is a very good BA program. I think too many people get caught up on letters - BFA/BA at the end of the day hard work and a LOT of luck with get you a job after graduation.
@marg928 agreed - my D is in a BA program at a private college and the tuition is very expensive. She received a very, very good scholarship to make it affordable. I know kids last year accepted into BoCo and couldn’t afford to go and chose other schools because of money. I found that of all the schools D auditioned at last year, BW was the cheapest and had a very manageable tuition.
@savedrama4momma You’ve probably already done this, but look at both programs curricula and see which one appeals most. I did this blindly w my S, so he had no idea which school he was looking at or where it was, and found it to be extremely beneficial. There are so many factors to assess in making this type of a decision. Best of luck!
@LBSMOM is your D in the BA program at BW? We’re trying to decide between the BA Theatre:Acting and Directing, with minors in Music and Dance, or a similar program at Muhlenberg. I am not caught up in BFA vs BA. I honestly prefer my S to do BA bc of flexibility of courses.
@savedrama4momma there is someone on the BFA Acting board who just posted they are trying to decide between Muhlenberg and Syracuse. Maybe you can help each other out. I can offer a small bit of info on Muhlenberg. I visited a couple of times when my oldest was looking for dance programs. I would say the cons are that it’s a non-audition program and it’s very small. But it’s probably close in size to Rider so you are comparing apple to apples there. Non-theater majors audition right alongside Theater majors for roles in the shows. The lead of all our HS shows (and best actress winner) is a current sophomore and was cast right out of the gate as a freshman in a main role in their fall show. The campus is really pretty with the most amazing dining hall I’ve ever seen. The area doesn’t offer much…except Dorney Park. And to say Rider is close to NYC would be stretching it. I guess that depends on what you consider close! It would probably take a good 2 hours by train. What I found important in comparing programs was analyzing how many credits are in the major. For example, Elon’s BFA has 68 and the BA at my D’s school has 56. Not a huge difference. On the other hand, a school like USC has 84 in their BFA and 52 in the BA. Something to think about. If the programs stack up well against each other then of course money should be the deciding factor.
Don’t be fooled by number of credits…yes to graduate those are the numbers but my daughter had almost ALL of her gen eds fulfilled in the theatre department. Her writing GE was accomplished through playwriting, her math GE was Arts Admin and theatre design, another was fulfilled in an acting for social justice class. So don’t let the lower number fool you. You can create a very comprehensive, fully packed theatre degree in a BA program.
@bisouu - And importantly it does not work in the reverse. I mean- you can add lots of extra theatre to the flexible BA, but you can’t add extra potentially interesting Gen Eds to the BFA. That’s the challenge for my S right now.
@savedrama4momma Hello – I am the one on the Acting board with the Syracuse/Muhlenberg dilemma. Will let you know if I have any additional information!
@bisouu@savedrama4momma yes good point. I’m just talking about the requirements for the degree. My D’s school has so many great theater electives that she can essentially graduate with a BFA (not on paper of course). I am seeing a potential problem where some of these great electives are very hard for underclassmen to get into. So maybe my theory will not work out in practice, we shall see!
So sorry @Work64 we are still waiting…hopefully we here today. When we called they swore that they were still sending acceptances via snail mail despite the acceptance phone calls they made at the beginning of the month. Where did your S or D audition? Best wishes.
My daughter was accepted to Muhlenberg and we toured the school following her scholarship audition. While the program seems pretty good and I really liked the faculty we met, the town itself is underwhelming and borders on some sketchy areas. We were seriously considering the school before she was accepted to a number of auditioned programs, but after receiving their financial award package, I now question if we would have actually sent her there. The price tag is on par with schools like NYU and Emerson and I would find it difficult to justify the cost for a non-audition school. Just my feeling though.
