Class of 2022 (the journey); sharing, venting, discussing

Should we visit a dream school if we are WL? If we receive an offer, will they also offer a FA package at the same time? Will we need to mske a decision right away or will we have time to sit on it for a while?

@Luciamom I can’t speak into the financial aid package, but YES!! You should definitely visit your dream school regardless of acceptance or WL. It will actually speak into your character if they see you coming to take interest even though you don’t have an offer yet!

@K&Tmom Feel free to PM me with specific questions.

A little encouragement to those who can’t afford to go visit the schools they’ve been accepted too. My daughter did not do any visits during the process. We just couldn’t swing it - nor could she miss that much school. It all came out fine. She confidentially made her decision and has no regrets. No school is going to be perfect, and sometimes your kiddo just needs to go with their gut. As much research on schools you have done…they’ve done more, I can guarantee it. They’ve met current students online and have a good sense of the people in the program. I can’t believe how many accepted students from the class of 2022 my daughter has already met online, because of the page the kids have going. I promise it will be ok, if they can’t sit in on every class and meet every professor. If you can swing it- go for it- but if you can’t …it will be ok. Any MSM peeps feel free to reach out to me and I can get you in touch my my daughter. I know some are hesitant because Luis is leaving… but I promise, the new dean is spectacular! Luis made a great foundation, he loaded the school with spectacular staff who literally seem to know everyone and still work on current shows. None of them are leaving. The search for who was to take over was very meticulous and the current MT students were able to sit in on the process. The vision of going forward is only going to make the program stronger. Xoxo

@1bamom…I will PM you if I can figure out how…!!! haha! That option is still not coming up for me on my home screen. @ducky312 was able to PM me and I could respond…maybe I haven’t posted enough?

@cluelessandtired Thank you so much! Maybe I can hope. But then I just checked on tuition and saw that people were saying that Hartt doesn’t give financial aid. So it is ALOT of money. Really wanted my D to go there. I didn’t know that was a thing to not give financial aid. But we’ll see if she gets in first. Thank you!

@MusicGoals and @K&Tmom you can’t PM until you have 15 posts

@fancytheatrekid -

My D was accepted into U Hartford (not Hartt) for the class of 2013. She was offered $12K a year, which even back then left about 10K per year (after SUNY tuition was accounted for as I agreed to pay that amount wherever she went). The school told me that it does not adjust initial awards to account for increases in tuition and fees, so she could not afford to attend as I refused to take Parent Plus loans or co-sign any loans. Perhaps they do adjust now but most schools don’t. A SUNY tuition (and by that I am including room and board and fees) was my limit. My D opted for a SUNY without debt.

Thanks @Boilermom

@jkl745 … I need more posts _ can you message me your thoughts on Belmont MT

@Wickersham2365 I messaged you back. Not sure if you got it though - I don’t gave 15 posts which I think is required to PM?
No worries if you just haven’t gotten to it though

Anyone with experience/ know of a student getting off of the Carnegie Mellon priority waitlist story? S was offered priority waitlist option which sounds good, but I just found out that if we get off of that list, we have 72 hours to put down an $800 deposit. Is this REALLY as dramatic as it sounds?

@vonlost - good point about the school not promising to meet total need. That makes sense.

Yes, there is a short time limit to put down a deposit and commit if offered a spot off the Priority Waitlist at CMU. My D was on it in her year and I know that is how it works there. So, your S should think it through ahead of time. My D wasn’t gonna go even if she got off the list and so made that decision. Your S should be ready with what he would do just in case.

@rutgersmom321 Have lurked for a couple of days after a year away, reading all these posts. Good luck to all with decisions and/or hearing from the stragglers. You’re all nearly there! My D was on the CMU priority WL two years ago, and yes, you need to confirm immediately back, with the $ if you want the spot. In her instance, it was pretty much the only school we hadn’t visited, as chances seemed so slim, despite a great audition. So we did a quick trip - CMU treated her wonderfully – and crossed fingers because she loved it, but that year all girls accepted, so it didn’t happen - not for us or the other two CC girls in the same situation.

But, that year two boys did decide to go elsewhere and one deferred a year and several boys made it off the WL . What’s nice is that they give you a specific date that you will hear by, after the May 1 deadline, and they did stick with that date. You could stay on longer, but my D decided to move on, emotionally, and took herself off at that point. And - I know this came up recently and I was going to comment - about deposits - we spoke with the school she’d be attending if the WL didn’t clear, and they were extremely understanding about the situation and were willing to wait until a week past the standard deadline for the deposit to be paid. We assured them that it was only between them and CMU, and they “got it”. I never thought to ask until someone else on CC suggested it.

@fancytheatrekid - Hartt does not “stack” talent and academic merit, they only do performing arts scholarships and need based aid, but they absolutely do give financial aid. My D has a quite generous talent award, so don’t give up hope until you see the numbers!

@rutgersmom321 when were you notified RE CMU? D was told something was coming regarding the priority waitlist but it hasn’t arrived (at least not via mail). She’s out of town until Wednesday and I don’t want her to miss a message!

@gingersnap97 Thank you! I’ll keep hoping then.

@artskids Not sure if it’s the same now, but from memory something arrived snail mail soon after the notification email and that package had the P/L waitlist details in it and a form to sign, and it also contained the financial aid award she would receive if admitted. I’m almost positive it was sent snail mail rather than in the email - but not 100% - finally my memory of that period is beginning to fade – thank goodness!

@artskids It was in my S Carnegie Portal! It gave us a link to confirm Priority status and we followed the link and promptly received a confirmation email. Should be in your D’s portal.

Thank you @rampions and @soozievt!
