Class of 2022 (the journey); sharing, venting, discussing

I sent you a pm @fairlyoddmom - at least I think I did…

Just replied…thank yoU!

Hi @fairlyoddmom, my son committed to Molloy for next fall. I can’t figure out how to pm from my phone but will try to contact you when I can get to my computer.

@fairlyoddmom - just sent you a giant pm!

.

My D is receiving daily emails from her chosen program school (ShenCo); is communicating with her classmates on social media;…and HOLY COW, we are all just so pleased and excited. We really feel like the fact that it took 2 years to find “the one” is insignificant, in light of how excited she is, and how perfect the program is (and students and instructors are) for her.

That is WONDERFUL @owensfolks!!! Just wonderful!

If anyone is interested in continuing to talk throughout the year, search for “CC MT Class of 2022 … The Journey Continues”

Thank you, @MTMOM17 ! We put that together so late last night and I was so busy today that I didn’t get to post! Thanks for remembering! Hope everyone can join us on the site!

Ok, in a panic here. D got one and only one acceptance for MT and we’re very happy with it. We had no guidance going through the process and feel pretty lucky to have got anything. Or we were until we got the financial aid package which is pathetic. We will have twins in college next year and we’ve been told we are expected to pay (borrow) an amount that is equivalent to more than half our (extremely modest) annual income for just one of them! D is in a group chat with almost all of the incoming MT class at her collehe and they got into discussing cost. Nearly everyone is getting tons of aid and scholarships except her. Where is this coming from??? These are kids from out of state, just like D. Based on perceptions and what little I know about the families, they all seem to be considerably better off than we are although I want to make it clear that yes, I am well aware that I really do NOT know anything about anybody else’s situation. But how do we get more money? The financial aid office was no help. And please don’t suggest a gap year and another round of auditions and applications. We’ve already done the gap year. Completely panicking!

Could it be that other kids got more merit money due to grades? Maybe your D did not because of the gap year? Did your D take any classes at community college during her gap year where she could be considered a transfer? Transfer applicants frequently get little to no merit aid. The only thing I can suggest is speaking to the theatre dept and explaining your D cannot afford to attend without more aid. Maybe they have some grant/scholarship money they could offer? Did you check the net price calculator before applying? I hope you can get more aid. Best of luck!

Oh no! @NewEngMTMom - that’s terrible news. First off, forget the group chatter - what other people were offered isn’t your problem and people who didn’t get aid won’t say anything so of course you’ll only hear from people who did. You D’s offer came in late, which means the school may have exhausted their “pool” of scholarship money before she was accepted. If that’s the case you may not have options because you don’t have another offer to “compare” to. Did you ask if there was a chance her aid would be reevaluated next year? Can you manage one year w/o aid?

@NewEngMTMom I second asking the department - we got a little more aid that way. The financial aid office had nothing to offer. Considering my d is our 3rd in college, thought the FAFSA would help more this year. nope. #loan

@NewEngMom I completely understand! My family is the least well-off than any of D’s other friends in MT, so I understand! Can you write a letter and ask for an appeal?

@NewEngMTMom, I second and third everyone who has recommended that you contact the Theatre Dept, and I recommend that you also contact the college admissions department and make sure that your D was considered for all the academic dollars that she might be eligible for.

Also: please remember that money that may become available as some students decline offers because they decide to go elsewhere, and this is probably just being calculated.

@NewEngMTMom you may also want to post on the financial aid forum on this site. There are many knowledgeble posters there, including financial aid representitives.

Agree with others here to ignore the group chatter, kids often do not actually understand the financials, and focusing on that could cloud the issue of your specific situation. Contact Molloy admissions, theater program, and CAP21 to see if there are any scholarships or grants she can still be in consideration for at this time. Also contact financial aid office to see if there may be a way to appeal the need based package and to explore the options for work study.

@KatMT - I think @NewEngMTMom’s acceptance was to LIU. If it were Molloy, I’d know where to send her.

@NewEngMTMom see if you can see if there’s any money from your local area that hasn’t been tapped into. My daughter wrote a 300 word essay and received a scholarship. Small albeit but if you did 10 small scholarship it would probably be worth it.

@EastchesterMom – thank you for catching my mistake! @NewEngMTMom – I apologize for misremembering.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions and encouragement. I will contact the department and also the admissions office. I plan to write an appeal letter, too. Anyone have any advice about things to focus on in that? D is not considered a transfer student, although we hope to convince the school to accept a few of her academic classes so she can free up every possible bit of her schedule for dance, etc. If we could get better aid next year, we would feel a lot less nervous about the amount we are expected to borrow this year. I’m also nervous about even being able to get the loans. If I were a lender I wouldn’t want to lend us half of our annual income every year for 4 years when my husband will retire in 6 years!
