@singoutlouise excellent advice!
My S has done 22 auditions. All schools have been very professional.
@EmsDad The floorplans are sooooo helpful! Really appreciate it!
@singoutlouise this is so true. If any of these schools were ‘bad’ or ‘unprofessional’, there wouldn’t be thousands of kids applying for them. It’s like a job: I absolutely hate my job right now, but there are people there that love it. There is something for everyone out there.
How many students does BOCO hear for mt? Their freshman class is like 65 so it sounds like they accept around 100 to yield that number! Sounds promising but I know the school is very competitive? Can someone clear this up for me?
@singoutlouise - great thoughts. I will freely admit I feel a need to explain/defend NYU b/c it is very different than other schools. And different doesn’t mean better or worse, just different. EVERY school has positives and negatives. Figure. Out what YOUR deal breakers are - that will help you find your fit
Thank you for the floor plans!
I agree that at any program, you are going to find kids who love it and some who don’t. That is why it is important to do your due diligence to find out all you can about a school and talk to many different people and not rely on one person’s opinion or experience, because your experience may be very different if you attend.
What I shared in an earlier post, however, that my kid experienced at a very well known and well regarded MT program, that she also liked a lot, where students were putting down another program (in this case NYU) to her, was in poor taste. I just don’t think kids at a program should be disparaging other programs they themselves have no first hand experience at to prospective students to their program. They should share what they do or don’t like about their own program without putting down other programs. IMO.
For some reason it seems people like to
Bash on NYU. Maybe it is due to their awesome reputation. A bit of jealousy maybe?
Kids have to try not to listen too hard and make their own decisions. We know kids who adore NYU.
@bfahopeful - I have always thought it is b/c NYU is so different from other programs… it’s bigger, the studio system is not what other people do etc. Who knows. NYU seems to be getting along just fine
My D went to a PA HS - so had a number of years of kids she knew going off to great BFAs in front of her. One thing that interested me as we developed her list was how much was based on how she was influenced by those other kids - not JUST “so and so loves going to X school”… but “so and so said the ‘people’ (students? Staff? half the time she didn’t know) were rude at Y school when they auditioned, so I don’t think I would like that school”.
Agreed! And that’s exactly what my kid did do…she went to NYU and it was a great fit. I truly understood the enthusiasm the kids had at the other program for their program, but don’t see why they need to put down another program they didn’t even attend. Oh well, it had no bearing on my kid’s choice, but just commenting on the experience.
@toowonderful my D went to PA HS too and same experience. It is actually a bit unfortunate because other schools aren’t looked at and maybe one that would have been perfect was passed by due to assumptions.
@bfahopeful - agreed. I pushed back on some… but there are only so many battles one can fight
@dontaskme1 For BoCo, my recollection from last year was that over 1000 auditioned, 90-100 kids were given offers and 75 accepted. Fairly good odds compared to many other schools, but just be aware that many of the kids they accept are dancers first so the spots for actors/singers who can move is probably much more competitive. Also, they (like every other school) have a type they like and if your kid is not that type, then chances are not great. My son is a singer who can act and move, and he is now a freshman at BoCo. Quite honestly, looking back at his acceptances, every single one feels like a winning lottery ticket. Every acceptance is priceless, and hopefully your kiddo has choices. So while chances are better at some schools like BoCo where they have a huge freshman class, it is still unbelievably competitive, particularly for girls.
Does anyone know if Ithaca MT currently has rolling admissions or waits until March? I looked at prior years and it seems to vary year by year.
I think that last year, it was March, @DramaMan . @lincoln56 would know.
I posted this under another section too so forgive me redundancy - I haven’t posted on this forum before and am unsure about where to ask this questions. My D has been academically accepted at all of her schools and has had her audition at JMU and will audition at George Mason and Montclair. I am preparing for the reality of the competition and low chances for the JMU, GMU and Montclair programs. Christopher Newport and University of Mary Washingotn are her safety schools with an audition at Fairleigh Dickinson coming up as well - they have given her a nice scholarship. If you had to select a safety from those three, which would you recommend? Does anyone have any particular feedback on any of these three schools?
Fairleigh Dickinson is in a super cute town of Madison NJ and there is a train stop into NYC. My daughter attends Drew University which is about one mile from FD. They are cross town rivals. LOL
@dontaskme1 My D would never be singled out as a dancer and she was accepted to BoCo. She did say that it was the hardest dance combo of all the ones she did and came out sweating. In general their freshman class is 50, but some years they get the yield wrong and more attend. Also, they don’t prescreen so many more kids audition. The odds of being 50 out of 1,000 are worse than being 25 out of 400 (prescreen schools) so it is just as competitive.
@bisouu Have you heard anything about their musical theatre program?
