Class of 2024 Admissions for Southwestern University (Texas)

@GeoJuanito did you receive the merit notification on the Sunday it was processed or was it during the next week?

@EarlyApps We were emailed our acceptance, “New information in your portal” on 11/10, and emailed our award notice on 11/12.

Well, after a few last minute glances at some large Arizona honors colleges, we submitted our enrollment deposit to SU. This was neat: Apparently they ring a bell on campus each time a new student commits. The student who led/hosted S20’s overnight campus visit messaged to say he was the one who rang the bell on his behalf. This very small school level of personal attention put a smile on S20s face and confirmed for mom and dad that this was the place for him.

We are visiting next week for admitted student’s day. My daughter is being non-committal about everywhere she’s been admitted. I’m concerned that Southwestern might be too small for her quirky personality and also she can struggle socially so wonder if this will be worsened by the small size? Any thoughts on whether the small size could be a downside? Also would love any thoughts on use of the socratic method of teaching that is apparently used there vs “regular” classroom teaching at larger institutions. Many thanks.

An overnight stay with an excellent student host sealed the deal for my son. SU admissions staff are very good at giving personal attention. Our admission counselor has been great.
The knocks I’ve read, probably on this board, are from students who say that a small school in general is more likely to have cliques like high school, and that it’s hard to be anonymous if/when you want to be.
I guess it boils down to what exactly each student feels they need at a school. For my son, it was probably that he wanted to remain a larger fish in a smaller pond like he has been in high school.

Interdisciplinary learning via the Paidea concept aims to create more well-rounded graduates. We liked that too. The proximity to Austin was also interesting.
