Potential weather issues in the midwest. D was advised that she could change her flight without a fee, but no earlier (pre-storm) flights available today. Praying she gets out and there safely. She built in a cushion to her travel plans and in a pinch could go tomorrow morning as her audition is after noon. Hoping all the other musicians have smooth traveling and great auditions.
We had to change our flight home from CCM to avoid Chicago. Hope a Denver connection is better! Airline was on top of it though. On the way to BU now and it’s 0 with the wind chill- ah, East Coast memories…
Good luck to everyone auditioning this weekend! Wishing you all good health and safe travels!
Boston U audition done- ten minutes total. Two full songs and a short sight read. Everyone very friendly. Will take music school tour this afternoon before heading out to Cincinnati.
Well, D’s flight to IU/Jacobs was cancelled 20 minutes prior to boarding. Was not yet snowing, so she thought she would get out right before it started. No available flights until tomorrow late in the day, after auditions. She is trying to work out plan B at the moment. Plan C is to reschedule the audition, but that would mean we lose the money from the hotel because of late cancellation. Remind me why I was nostalgic for this process again? Ha ha.
Oh no @songbirdmama - I was just wondering if she was on her way. Fingers crossed for Plan B. Maybe a bus?
Boyfriend is from Chicago suburbs. He is trying to find someone to loan him a car and he will drive her. They aren’t old enough to rent, so it gets complicated. Don’t really understand why you have to be 25 before you can rent a car, but there it is!
I am sorry for the flight cancellation. I hope your D’s Plan B works out with IU.
We got the similar situation last year in early March flying into NYC…All flights to / from NYC were cancelled. We got a flight 12 hours later, arrived at JFK at 3AM instead of 3PM one day before, so our first night stay at hotel was first morning stay.
The New School cancelled the day for all live auditions (closed school completely so probably Mannes did, too) and rescheduled live auditions with those applicants. Some applicants couldn’t reschedule, so they sent a video audition later. But MSM, NYU, Juilliard all sticked with their live audition schedules in the same week.
Apparently roads are getting bad. In principle they could try to go early tomorrow morning if the roads are improved, as her audition isn’t until 3pm. She may be looking into plan C - rescheduling for February. Unfortunate way to start this process.
@songbirdmama Ouch. So sorry for you and your D having to go through this. Why did music schools think that winter was a good time for auditions, what with weather delays, illness going around and the like??
I know, right @Racingfan53? I’m so sorry @songbirdmama. I’m so frustrated for your D- bad enough to deal with the stress of auditions itself! Hoping it works out for her and for everyone else auditioning this weekend. Fingers crossed.
S just got an email from U WA, our state school, that he was accepted to the music school. We weren’t expecting anything yet because he just auditioned last Sat and because mid-March was when my non-music S receive his notification. He still has to be admitted to the University itself. He has the academic stats to get in, so one big relief as he’s only applying to one other school. He’ll also find out about any scholarships in mid-March.
@songbirdmama I feel so bad for your D. I imagine rescheduling isn’t so easy either because of all the other auditions she probably has scheduled. I really hope she’s able to get there.
Congrats @Busy_Momma your S has got one locked down! That’s a super fast notification. UW is my alma mater. I love that school.
Sorry the weather isn’t cooperating @songbirdmama. Thinking good thoughts for clear roads.
I’ve always thought it was no coincidence that the prefrontal cortex (the part of the brain that responds to situations with good judgment and an awareness of long-term consequences) only reaches full development at age 25 and that is also the minimum age to rent a car.
@NYCMusicDad based on your reasoning, I’m not sure we should let them vote until 25 then! Ha ha.
@JeJeJe You have frightened me. She has NYC auditions the first week of March. We assumed it would be unlikely to have weather cancellations so late in the season, but seems like you have experienced something else! Well, this could be very interesting indeed!
My sentiments EXACTLY !!! Sorry about your kid’s weather issues. Hope it all gets cleared up and plan B is a go. What a way to start indeed. But that means it can only get better from here. Onward and Upward to great auditions!!
CONGRATS to your son !! Super fast turn around. Hoping for such quick turnarounds here myself so the kid can cancel the rest of the auditions beyond 2/15. That’s the plan anyway. What a relief to have a good one in hand already.
Back in NY after a week in sunny Scottsdale…wishing everyone luck on this cold, cold day! Re: NYC auditions, while weather can be iffy in March there are so many options — three local airports/hundreds of flights a day and every kind of public transit — that things can generally be rescheduled successfully. And once you get here, the city doesn’t shut down unless it’s a true blizzard (once every couple of years). Subways not only provide transportation but warm the streets above and melt the snow. Things get pretty slushy, but waterproof boots solve a myriad of problems.
But as we learned, it’s the getting there…,
D is now in uber to boyfriends sisters house to borrow a car. Just at edge of freezing. Roads not great but they are going to see how it goes. In an hour it should be all rain. Tentative arrival noon for 3 pm audition which should give her time to dress relax and warm up. Thank you all for your kind words. Toi toi toi
@songbirdmama - I am thinking lots of good thoughts for your daughter’s travels today. Keep us posted!
And I am with you @Racingfan53 ! With the weather and illness, January/February seems like the worst time of year for auditions. Even with the humidifier on, my daughter still woke up with dry sinuses/throat from the hotel heater. Next trip, the voice steamer is coming too!
@runninglate D travels everywhere with her steamer. She just got another item at Christmas that all her MM friends swear by. It’s a silicone mask to wear during air travel that allows you to breathe your own recirculated air and you don’t get dried out. They all think it’s essential. She was going to try it on the flight to Jacobs, so I can’t yet give personal feedback. It is a humidiflyer”
