Class of 2024 undergrad/Class of 2022 grad: The Tours, the Auditions, the Journey

S tells me he’s still applying to Temple, but I won’t believe it until I pay for the application fee. I really liked it when we visited last year. The band director was very welcoming even though we were trying not to be noticed during a rehearsal. I also liked the possibility of free tuition based on high academic stats and additional merit money based on audition, which is what we were told. I didn’t realize they had a great jazz program as well, so I may be encouraging S21 to apply for jazz trumpet next year.

Woot Woot for the Temple Tribe !!! ??

@coloraturagirl - Was there a campus tour offered at CCM? I’m not seeing it on the schedule. Just the audition, meeting with voice faculty, parent meeting, and student panel Q&A. Am I missing anything?

Congrats on acceptances so far!

Daughter auditioned at a nearby LAC Saturday and they made scholarship offer that day, which we were not expecting. It’s a small school, so I guess they’re able to do things differently. The scholarship was very generous, and it will likely be the easiest on our wallet. Daughter was not excited about the school and was only auditioning because a teacher at the school asked her to, but I think she’s more open to it now, since they seemed to really want her there. It’s always nice to be wanted. They’re also interested in her playing other instruments (she plays several) and that is a big plus for her.

Headed to Nashville this weekend for Belmont.

@runninglate, there was a tour of CCM Village (I guess since the CU campus is so large and many students won’t spend much time there because they are grads students). We could not attend as we had to checkout from our hotel and race back for the faculty meeting. Good luck!

Should read grad students ^^^^
There is also a tour of CCM Village on the website. We use YouTube a lot for tours that we simply can’t take.

@mom2clarinetobsessedkid I admit to being surprised at how fast so many of these auditions seem to be. We had that experience at NYU (10 minutes in and out, no “program” to speak of) but most of S’s auditions took at least a few hours. Typically a welcome by the Dean, performance by student or faculty ensembles, then kid goes off to take a theory test, an ear-training test, and the audition itself. Ithaca, Syracuse, and Rutgers all ran more or less this way. Berklee was shorter but did include the audition and a one-on-one interview, so about 45 minutes in all. Eastman was the outlier, taking most of the day – more intense and personalized, but that’s a good metaphor for the school itself.

So it sounds like IU auditions are of the quick in and out variety. Can people weigh in on other schools?

for those who’ve submitted pre-screens for jazz at temple or suny purchase - how long did it take to hear back? did you hear via email?

@akapiratequeen my son’s auditions last year at University of North Texas and Luther College we’re both part of a day of events for auditioning students. UNT had a dean’s welcome, performances by current students, info sessions for various programs, representatives from music related clubs and organizations, and I believe a campus tour was available. He was also able to visit music classes (chosen from a long list) the day before his audition (this was memorable for me because we dropped him off for the day of sitting in on classes while we went to do other things, and there was this moment that felt to me like the first day of kindergarten, watching him standing there as we drove away.) The voice audition was on stage in an auditorium (I think he said the faculty panel of evaluators was also on stage so not too terrifying). There was also a theory and ear training component in other rooms, and lots of current students around to chat with. His cello audition was with several strings faculty. There was also an interview for music Ed.
The Luther college audition was part of a day of activities, a meeting with music Ed faculty, sitting in on a class, a campus tour. My son wanted to do everything and wouldn’t stop to go to the cafeteria for the included lunch so someone gave him a sandwich off a tray that I think was meant for the music dept staff. They were very welcoming and my son had a great day there.
Both Luther and UNT had very well organized and pleasant audition days.

Good luck to all of you who are just getting into audition season! Enjoy, and stay healthy!

@arkham It took my piano player about 3 weeks to receive an audition email from Temple. The whole process took place via email

Anyone heading to UNT this coming weekend for auditions? My daughter is auditioning for jazz voice and is nervous. Any idea if there will be a panel or just 1 person? She has only auditioned for U of I (early acceptance) and a local school (both went great) so this is her first big audition. Thank you!

@MusicSchoolSeeker thanks! my S had an audition date scheduled within 3 weeks but it was stated as contingent on pre-screen results and that was a bit over a month ago. he’s going to inquire

@arkham I thought Temple only required pre-screen for jazz guitar, I should’ve read your post more carefully! I don’t think it would hurt to follow up anyway. I believe Temple only has 2-3 more live audition dates on the schedule. Good luck!

@NECJ97 my son is a freshman music major at UNT. He auditioned for classical voice and cello last year. Both auditions were in front of panels and I’d expect jazz will be as well. @GoForth may know something more.
UNT was very organized and welcoming (that’s continued to be true) and the whole process was great. There’s several info sessions and some performances by current students that parents can attend as well. There’s a Starbucks next to the music building, and more places to eat in the student union if you get hungry while you wait and want to stay nearby. The music department also provided some fruit and muffins and such in the morning last year. Also lots of good restaurants in Denton!
My son did sing jazz in high school and Jennifer Barnes was clinician for his all state jazz choir one year, also a really great experience.
Best of luck to your daughter. I hope she enjoys audition day. Please ask if you have any questions!

Great thank you!

D and I are headed to Michigan today. Lesson today and audition tomorrow. This is her first of the season. Why am I so nervous?

Can anyone who is up north tell me how bad the weather is really supposed to be this weekend? We’re planning to drive from Cincinnati to Pittsburgh on Saturday, and weather.com has me worried.

D has flight from Chicago to Maryland and we are VERY nervous that it might be a repeat of last weekend!!!

Flying into BWI? You should be just fine !! Having lived in both places (currently right outside MD), I can assure you that IF you make it out of Chicago, getting on this side of the country will be just fine.

What’s in MD? Or you’re just using that as a thoroughfare to NY or PA or? (GREAT & MUCH cheaper idea, by the way !) Just curious. Well, there is UMDCP and UD, but for VP? Hmmm

Peabody is in Maryland  Not sure anyone is headed there though!
