Son is home for Fall Break! He is loving taking mainly music classes. Bc of his AP/Dual degree credit, he only has to take one non-music class which is great bc we hear things will amp up between sophomore and junior year as a double major! Eeek!

But he also already performed in his first concert this month! It’s a benefit of going to a college with no graduate school so there are more opportunites for undergrads!

He loves his studio! hope all is well with everyone! Here is my YouTube video I promised https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Yew5_78O3M

@BoyFluteMom just want to comment on the use of the term “double major” in the video. Do you mean “double degree”? Or both? The essay “Double Degree Dilemma” in the Read Me thread here on the music forum is helpful is distinguishing these two different paths.

Yay!! I am so happy he’s having a great time! And you made it to Fall Break!

And great video-- I am sure loads of people will benefit from it. Well done!

Thanks! I spoke so fast, brain going 50 miles a minute, I might have conflated the two! Doh! In context, I was more likely referring to Double Degree, when you’re doing to distinct programs and going for two degrees: My boy for example, if he goes through it will earn a BFA in Flute Studies and a BS in Biology.

Thank you!! Hope yours is doing superb as well! I just rewatched it too! thanks for watching!

oh and thank you so much for watching!! Hope your kiddo is doing well!

Ditto- my son got to perform with Time for Three after only a few weeks because no grad students.

In response to your inquiry, my daughter auditioned for Berklee Dec 5th and received her acceptance letter and scholarship info December 16th.

Hello, I am wondering about music merit and ED (specifically ED2). Does applying ED change chance of merit/amount of merit significantly?
Mine is applying now of course, but I figured last years crew would know

Wish I could help but none that my son applied to for music had ED…he did EA at 3, the Merit money came after the audition anyway

So you are saying that there was at least some merit, not need-based, money, even though he did early decision? That is helpful. Do you mind if I ask where he went?

This was EA at Frost. He is at North Texas (No EA and merit came after auditions) And yes, merit NOT need based

Oh- I see. My confusion, so not an ED merit story. Thank you anyways, but yes frost and Texas are great. Congrats and I hope he is having a great experience

Update on s23 who is a college freshman at Syracuse as a vocal performance major.

He loves Syracuse and has found a great friend group. He has zero regrets about school choice. (He got into Jacobs but we couldnt afford it. He turned down full tuition offers from Baldwin Wallace and Jacksonville U feeling campuses were too small.)

One of the reasons why he chose Syracuse was because of the opportunities for electives in music industry and sound/recording technology. However he found his schedule so full with vocal performance requirements he had zero time for anything else. So after much deliberation, hes switching to music industry major which still requires him to perform but allows for those other electives.

I was able to see him perform live during parents weekend. I also caught some livestreamed performances. Hes growing and improving which is great to see.

I am so happy to read this positive experience! We are in the same boat at North Texas with the jazz studies/guitar performance program…zero regrets and loving it! Working with the guitar professor he wanted and thrilled with his lab band placement. First semester was VERY rigorous (music classes) and he is enjoying a much deserved break! Mom is happy that he is happy!

Hi there, I’m so happy to hear this! I remember making decisions last year, and I’ve been rooting for your kid and hoping he’s happy. My son is going through something really similar with a shift toward some industry learning. He loves Loyola, and looking back at the schools we could not afford (most of them), it seems it was the best choice for him all along. However, he is switching to a Pop/Comm/Industry major with Jazz Studies as a minor. He’s been happily challenged by the jazz program and loves the guitar prof, so he’s keeping private lessons with the jazz prof, along with all the pop com requirements. He just wants some industry learning, and I’m happy that his school is flexible. It’s really great to hear that your son is doing well.

I really appreciate you guys coming on here to give updates! I have a high school junior guitar player and I followed your journeys last year. He will be applying to many of the same schools. So glad your kids have landed in the right places!

I do wish Loyola would have given us more money but he truly is happy at Cuse.
I do feel bad about him switching out of VP but he is still taking most of the same classes and taking voice lessons (along with being in a choir) so its a compromise.
