PS your daughter’s at Yale right? My youngest is there and in YSO with her I believe ![]()
Yes, my daughter is in YSO, she loves it! It was a very hard choice for her between Shepherd’s flute studio spot and Yale, in the end of the admissions process this spring. We follow all the latest news from Rice though - she has a lot of musician friends there. Special place!
Your student will always hear about their prescreen results.
My son (Yalie) is doing both music and engineering which would not have been possible at Rice… but Rice is so great if you’re just doing music for sure! It is very special ![]()
Same reason my daughter is at Yale - interested in Economics, Data Science and Music! ![]()
Our S heard from Eastman as well today for piano performance! So they are working through the applications quickly!
Woops just realized folks were talking about CIM extending their deadline, not UMich.
Wow they are sending results? I thought we would have to wait another 10 days at least.
S (composition) didn’t advance with Eastman, but he’s okay with it. Good luck to those who are still waiting to hear from them. Last school for him will be Curtis, but he recognizes it’s a reach.
I’m sorry but glad he took it well. We are still anxiously waiting. This is his last one and his top choice. Good luck at his upcoming auditions!
Yes! Our son was super excited, and it was a bonus nice surprise to get a positive early instead of waiting in anticipation! This waiting is so stressful for all:) Best luck to you as well!
Flew into Madison last year from CLT- wasn’t that expensive. Luckily didn’t need to bring cello with, used a loaner while there
Anyone here been through music prescreen for ED 2? Will the school also let the applicant know if they passed or not, and call the kid in for an audition/interview, sometime before the actual notification date in mid-Feb?
My daughter (soprano, classical voice) got prescreen passes from Eastman yesterday and NYU last week.
She has the option to do remote for Eastman but…it’s Eastman. Does anyone have any insight? To me it’s obvious on campus is best, but sometimes people will say no no, all these kids got in remote, it’s fine. And of course we are not made of money, and any legit fair and valid remote audition opportunity has to be considered.
Thoughts? If Carnegie Mellon would just come through I’d go ahead and try to schedule some multi-city trips. They set up a private voice lesson with her for next week so I feel like surely that means she’ll pass prescreen but for all we know this is their typical weeding out process before sending out prescreen results. I know Juilliard’s audition dates for classical voice aren’t until early March so no need to even consider that possibility for multi-city, that’s after everything else is done.
Eastman is one of the ones DD wants to do in person - she hasn’t heard back yet;
My S did a virtual at Lawrence and got a huge scholarship. I wouldn’t bother with flying in.
That’s good to hear thank you!
We are from California and my daughter will be auditioning at multiple schools in the cold weather. How should she dress for the audition? Do you wear cold weather clothes outside and then change into the dress and shoes for the audition? Do girls wear summerly looking dresses or more long sleeve warm ones or pants and tops? Any suggestions are much appreciated.
Great question! Appropriate dress varies depending on the type of audition. So classical instrumentalists tend to have a certain standard or typical look. Vocal performance can be quite different. And jazz/popular music also seems to have its own style.
I see from your prior posts that your daughter is a vocal performance candidate. I will defer to @KaylaMidwest @bridgenail and others with VP kids.
Helpful hint for posters: if you feel comfortable including your musician’s instrument/focus of study, others can tailor a much more specific answer. ![]()
My kid is a classical instrumentalist and male. Super easy…all black, no tie or jacket, dress shoes. He also was instructed by his teacher back during audition season to have a good haircut to avoid distraction of hair falling in his face.
But all this is very different from a female VP candidate. (I would still advise clothing/accessories that are not distracting)
We are from the upper midwest. My daughter had black fleece lined tights she used a bunch. She had several outfit options, a couple dresses and dress pants, flowy blouse, blazer. Had a neutral cardigan to put over her dresses before and after. True confessions - she did wear doc martens at some auditions.
It was very icy/snowy and chilly in our parts last winter! We had record breaking cold when we were in Boston. So weird. Didn’t seem to hurt results at all.
Fleece tights are kind of like this I think, she is still using these, they wash up well.
