It says financial aid offer but shows Scholarship. I wish there would be more. Is this what yours looks like?
My son got admitted to McGill for BM in violin performance. What instrument does your daughter play?
Ours is different. In that spot where yours says merit aid, ours says âU of M grant estimated.â
Looking at both this thread and the âacceptancesâ one, I do not see a lot of âfullâ tuition scholarships discussed. E.g., Curtis costs $25K/yr (room board) and Colburn is free, but assuming you either donât get into one of those or donât wish to attend those for whatever reason, are any other top notch music schools (e.g. Juilliard, Rice, USC, IU) coming close to Curtisâs âcostâ? Iâm talking just merit (assume not much âneedâ as per the FAFSA) and assuming the musician really is one of the top in their instrument. These $15-40K scholarships that some people have posted are nice, but when a schoolâs yearly cost is close to $80K, it would still end up costing an exorbitant amount of money. Does anyone know of undergrad kids who got full tuition merit?
Yes, last year my son got merit awards at NEC and Juilliard that were similar in dollars to what he got from Curtis, covering or almost covering at least full tuition. Colburn was the most in terms of actual dollars. The kids who are getting in to Curtis and Colburn tend to get that level of award at all the top schools. Though ironically he only got 50% tuition at his safety school!
D24 has a wide cohort of friends applying this year - the low merit seems to be a theme for some schools
One of my sonâs close friends, class of 2027 string musician, received full or close to full tuition grant offers from multiple schools including Rice Shepherd, Julliard, Curtis, and Northwestern Bienen. Some of these grants have two components - merit scholarship and financial aid. Merit scholarship portion is awarded annually if certain requirements (such as GPA) are met, while the financial aid portion has looser term. I didnât ask for more detail since we donât qualify for financial aid. This kid is absolutely top candidate.
Yes but that is not purely merit?
For that kid, if his parents were richer, all the schools he applied to would happily offer him full tuition merit scholarship.
Does anyone have any intel on when Juilliard will announce their vocal performance/opera admissions for masters students? My S BB got a call back there and has heard back from the other schools he applied to with acceptance and financial offers. He is just waiting to hear on the scholarship offer from CCM but has heard back from the others. We want to get all of this resolved and move forward and are hoping we hear something before the April 1 deadline.
Same!! Violin - We are excited - we are leaning that way!!
It is such a great university - she applied to the music faculty program - it is a violin performance degree or concentration but she can take other classes in the music dept - music education, technology and music entrepreneurship - it is affordable. I am excited.
Yes, my son is leaning that way, too, though still waiting to hear from CIM. He fell in love with McGill and Montreal when he went for his audition. Did not get any merit from music school, but he did apply for some McGill scholarship, though I word yet. It is certainly affordable!
I think it just offers more than other schools especially for an undergrad school. My daughter either but it basically costs the same as our state flagship school. My son will be at Dartmouth next year engineering - in a dual program with another LAC college . Dartmouth is the half way point between home and McGill. It just seems like it was meant to be!! We are waiting for 2 also but she had me order a sweatshirt today. All the violin teachers are excellent.
Yes, so true! My son has a twin brother (computer science) who applied to Dartmouth, though he hears today (did get into UMass Amherst, so general direction for us since we are in Colorado). Has your daughter heard which studio she was assigned to? My son got an email about a week ago or 2 asking his preferences again for studio, but he has not heard to which he was assigned.
no she did not get that email! I will have her email them. She just got her acceptance Monday though! We are in Massachusetts. UMASS Amherst is a great school - congrats!! It is a top 20 program for CS.
oh so good to hear about Umass. Yes, i am going to have my son do the same. Honestly, i think he got that email because he had listed a professor who has now gone on leave Axel Strauss) and another professor he knew from Encore. So he gave new preference, but no word. Unfortunately, as the 17-year-old he is, after stating his new pref, he added âor any other faculty member, they are all really excellent.â Oh my. We shall see what that produces!
Axel Strauss is on leave but I have heard they are all excellent. I think that is fine to say that honestly!!!
Hahaha. Thanks for the reassurance. I havenât had time to research itâŠ
Waiting on Juilliard (UG/transfer) here too. In previous years, it looks like some results were available before April 1 (grad and UG), but weâre just figuring Monday 4/1 here. Cogratulations to your son! I can understand what a nail-biter that would be, I hope itâs resolved soon!
