Class of 29 Undergrad/Class of 27 Grad: All Things Related to Music School Applications (prescreens/tours/interviews/auditions/supplements/etc)

As said above, yes, you can be accepted for an MM with any UG degree…if your audition is strong enough. But you may have to take additional classes if you are lacking in certain areas. My D had to take a theory test, for example, at her grad school (after acceptance). Some students had to take or re-take certain theory levels if they did not pass.

So, be aware that you can be accepted with a BA…but you may be required to do extra coursework, depending on your UG courses, to graduate with the MM degree. I saw this with BA and BME degrees. For the BME candidates (my D knew a few), some students did take a year off to work with a private teacher to enhance their repertoire (another area that schools may consider in accepting you).

There are many music disciplines. So…it will all depend. I just think that it should be stated that a BM candidate will most likely be ahead of a BA or BME candidate in PERFORMANCE (note that I’m not talking about composition or academic music pursuits). A BM degree for VP, for example, does focus strongly on the building blocks to perform in multiple languages. And, each year there are juries to pass that require specific repertoire. A BA candidate may be vocally talented and accepted…but may be expected to catch up in key areas to graduate depending on the school.

It shouldn’t be assumed that for PERFORMANCE a BA or BM are basically the same. Of course some schools use different language. My D got the BSOF at IU…and yes, it had fewer language requirements. With APs and a summer abroad, my D was able to keep up. But the BS is different from the BM (slightly in my D’s case).

You always need to look at the semester by semester curriculum for each degree closely to assure that you get the desired coursework.

Did your student audition early?

My kids got merit offers from UW Madison through the school of music with their music acceptance. Which was seperate than the general admission through the portal. (and it is possible they are doing it differently this year)

finally got an email reply this morning to my student saying changing was fine and to simply tell the faculty what rep they will be playing. Hope it will be that simple. I know the faculty want to hear them play what they’re more comfortable playing, but just hate the added stress of not being able to change it ahead of time. hope that helps!

So helpful! Good luck! Maybe our kids will meet tomorrow. My son is on jazz guitar.

Has anyone auditioned for the popular music program at USC? My son has some questions

Yes this is under early action. The letter we got from the school of music says that the school will make a decision on Scholarships in March. I assume they will check on the RD kids, also. I wonder how many students get a scholarship and how much it is.

She is EA. After her audition a few weeks ago, she got a letter from the school of music saying that she was accepted into the school of music. Then, the official university admission letter came in yesterday.

Not my S, but close friend’s S is a freshman in that program now. I am happy to relay any questions. Feel free to PM or ask here.

Mine just got his UW school of music letter: he passed the audition!

Son got into James Madison Univ. (a few days ago) and U Maryland College Park (today) and is very excited about MD but we don’t live in state. Does anyone happen to have a sense of whether this school ever provides in-state tuition to out-of-state music students, or if it’s generous with music merit aid? No mention of either in acceptance letter…

Congrats! I have one at UMD now (non music major) and she loves it. My S auditioned and was accepted last year. He was offered a music specific scholarship, equivalent to approximately half off tuition not including room and board. We are OOS. Some others may also have received an academic scholarship on top of the music school scholarship. From our understanding that was pretty good for a school that does not give a lot of money. He is not there now but liked the school.

Scholarship offers came in mid-March separate from acceptance.

We had an Eastman audition this weekend. There were a variety of seminars one could attend about various admission related topics (financial aid, student life, academics, etc), as well as short tours of the performance halls and an opportunity for a school tour. Because of my child’s audition time we weren’t able to get to all of the things we might have wanted to (it wasn’t really going to be helpful for me to go to the seminar on student life instead of my child). All in all, well run day with lots of helpful people encouraging the students and making everyone as welcome as possible.

We will be at Eastman end of February. Thanks for the information. What did you think of the campus ans surrounding area?

The weather was rainy then snowy, and we’d had long travel days, so we didn’t explore too much outside the campus itself. We liked how the campus is compact - and it sounded like if a student wanted more, the University of Rochester campus is a short and convenient free bus ride away. The performance halls are lovely, the practice rooms are tiny (at least the one we used was), and there was a security presence on the campus both inside and outside the buildings. It was cleaner and felt “safer” than my urban Chicago University campus in the 90s.

We were at Eastman this weekend visiting our grad student daughter/watching her in the opera and a competition. I thought I’d visit here to see if anyone was in town for auditions. Rochester did not welcome you with very good weather!!! :grimacing::grimacing:

Are you going for the February 21 Eastman audition? If so, we’ll be there that day, too. Maybe we’ll see you there!

I’m hoping for good weather because we’re driving from Eastman to Carnegie Mellon, and we Texans don’t drive very well on snow and ice. We’re going to try to do half the drive the evening after the audition and then finish the drive the next morning. Her CMU audition is at 4 pm, so at least we have most of the day to get there if needed.

For those who have done the Eastman audition, they say you have to be available until 8 pm. Did you really have to stay that late, or is that only if you end up with a late audition time? When do they actually give them their audition time? Is it sent ahead of time, or do you find out that morning when you check in?

My son is a freshman at Eastman, happy to answer any questions as well. We were told the same last year regarding being available all day. He was given a specific audition time maybe a couple of weeks ahead of time and provided a schedule for the whole day. Part of his instruments audition day was a masterclass in the evening (6pm). Turned out they invited some of the students who auditioned to perform at the Master class, those people were told about an hour before the masterclass via text from the professor that they were playing. So it was important to be available all day to attend everything. I’m not sure all instruments do this, but it’s good to keep in mind. I know my son’s studio for one of the audition days is putting on a recital that evening that my son is participating in with the other freshman. I think attending everything you can is important to get a feel for the school itself, and to show continued interest to the professors who are evaluating.

Actually we will be there the following weekend. What instrument does your musician play?

The grand tour is this weekend, starting on Friday. I still can not believe we were able to schedule 4 auditions in 5 days. We start with Boston, fly to Pittsburgh for Carnegie Mellon, drive to Cincinnati for CIM, and fly to San Francisco. My DD is well prepared, so she will hopefully have peace of mind. Hoping the weather cooperates.

She’s a vocalist. After reading all the posts about traveling with instruments, I’m very thankful hers is internal and doesn’t require any special travel arrangements, LOL.
