Class of 29 Undergrad/Class of 27 Grad: All Things Related to Music School Applications (prescreens/tours/interviews/auditions/supplements/etc)

Hi! I can see that you ran the acceptance thread last year. Would you be able to tell me how you created it and managed the information? I was thinking about starting that thread for this year, but want to make sure I can manage it. Feel free to DM me.

It looks like one has been started.

Apparently my ability to paste a link is hampered by the fact that I have not yet had my coffee this morning.

@Clara30 appears to have an acceptance thread started.

Here we go

My son (jazz piano) auditioned at Northwestern on Friday. He thinks it went well, which is a good sign given how hard on himself he usually is, and got some nice feedback. I was worried about weather potentially preventing us from getting back home for his Saturday concert, but it all worked out despite a snowstorm Friday night. Three more to go in consecutive weeks at Oberlin (2/21), Eastman (2/27) and Jacobs (3/7 or 8).

Waiting in Cleveland to fly out after auditions at Oberlin. They had a nice day at planned with tours and informative sessions. It was especially nice to hear a number of the student ensembles play.

We weren’t able to attend any of the planned Oberlin events last weekend because of another audition and weather, so I’d love to hear any impressions or takeaways you (or anyone else!) had.

We had a great weekend. It’s in a small town, but the town is bigger than the one we live in. So, my son didn’t feel like the town was too small. Welcoming people. The president spoke about the importance of service in the school’s philosophy, and gave a very encouraging speech.

Yep, I started it yesterday. I figured someone had to do it

I’m keeping a Google Doc, so it’s easy to paste everyone’s info into that and update, then paste into a new post. I’ll try to update once every day or two so that it stays current.

Sorry that I just saw this! Last year I just kept a doc that tracked all of the info users would DM me. That way I could pretty easily copy and paste the updates when necessary. I think I saw in the comments below that one has been started for this year? Let me know if you need any more help!

Yes, I agree! The Oberlin President is impressive. Basically gave a TED Talk on “Why Oberlin” and did a great job of selling it. While exhausting, we both enjoyed the whole day. Hearing the ensembles was really fun too.

D accepted the offer from Susquehanna! We went for an accepted student day and she just couldn’t see herself anywhere else and wanted to ring the bell like so many of the other students there. She still has 2 schools to hear back from and I’ll update the results thread once I have the info. Go Riverhawks :orange_heart:

Wanted to say that we did a Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) audition weekend and it was so much nicer than most of the other places we’ve been as far as organization and showing off the school goes. Also, their dorms are literally full apartments and are gorgeous… There has been some bad press for CIM recently with the conductor quitting/firing etc and some staff leaving, and I hope that all fixes really soon because I was very impressed overall by the school and its teachers.

Dropping in from the outside to say that a violinist down the hall from us at the Glidden House in Cleveland was practicing their arpeggios and etudes this evening and they sounded great. If it was one of you – wishing you the very best of luck!

(although I don’t have an aspiring musician kiddo, I considered that pathway myself in high school and am rooting hard for you all!)

Sorry, just seeing this. My son plays jazz drums. They’ve set up the jazz auditions so that the applicants play for 15 minutes or so with Purchase students and faculty. He got his audition confirmation email on Jan 22, but I think they’re rolling, especially because they’re trying to group the kids carefully with the “combos” that will be there. NYU is doing a similar thing, but for four hours instead of 15 minutes.

See you at Oberlin. S and I are looking forward to seeing the campus and jazz facilities. Any idea if any jazz programming is planned for this Thursday night?

I looked at the event schedule and there do not appear to be any jazz performances happening Thursday. We’re also very much looking forward to it. See you there!

We were at Oberlin this last weekend and the student performances did include a Jazz Ensemble.

Your son will play with NYU students for 4 hours!? That is an intense audition (and/or an amazing jam session). I bet you can really tell if it’s a good fit by the end!

My son is headed to NYU for a jazz audition in a couple of weeks. Is the audition 4 hours long?!

hope you got to see the student performances at your visit- we saw a jazz quartet do one piece as part of it and they were amazing.
