Class of 30 Undergrad/Class of 28 Grad: All Things Related to Music School Applications (prescreens/tours/interviews/auditions/supplements/etc)

My daughter got a separate academic acceptance to Michigan State and IU. Michigan State was definitely before the audition and IU may have been after… I honestly can’t remember. Studio acceptances came later, after the live auditions. It was odd getting two different acceptances! Invitations to Honors Colleges came separately from those. UMich, however, sent only one acceptance letter after the audition. It came from the school of music and would not/could not have been sent unless she’d already been accepted academically. Financial offers were sent separately from all acceptances.

Very good point!!! Hope everything gets cleared up for you guys

@Msumt thank you for all of this inside information. My son got an email yesterday that outlined some of these events. It’s great that they do it, and we will plan around it. Would love to hear what your son thinks of the program so far. Mine did ESTI after his freshman year, so he has worked with both professors before. Do both seem to be staying awhile? Please feel free to PM me!

Did anyone else not pass voice prescreen at Vanderbilt Blair? Daughter did not pass prescreen and is pretty sad. She passed prescreen at UT Austin and already passed prescreen, auditioned, and was accepted to SMU Meadows. Her stats are 1550 (SAT) and 4.0 unweighted GPA and 6 AP’s all 5’s. She is a four-year TPSMEA All-State choir member as well. Any idea where we may have went wrong?

Those are great stats. Not sure why. Maybe prescreen videos are not what they are looking for.

It may not have been stats at all. It could very well be something as simple as how many spots they have available to fill.

Has anyone heard from Oberlin yet? They are sorta the last school we are waiting on.

We were waiting on Temple but we are going to opt to send videos for the final audition if he gets past their prescreen for guitar.

I was hoping for Oberlin by now so that we can figure out how to manage Northwestern/Peabody/Oberlin

Not yet for voice. The website says mid-December, so maybe tomorrow? Most schools are on Winter Break by now, so we’re trying to not think about our last three until January!

My son is a senior in high school, applying for music composition. Passed prescreen for Peabody, did not pass Eastman. Waiting on Oberlin. He has not heard from Bienen- but some of you have? Is it different for composition at Bienen?

My S is still waiting on Bienen too (voice). Hoping tomorrow or Tuesday?

My daughter heard from Bienen, piano. But it might be different for each studio as to when it is released.

Oberlin sent audition invite today.

Anyone hear from UMich? BM Piano

Trying to schedule Oberlin, but the calendar did not show on the scheduling page. Anyone else have this issue?

Trying to figure out how to make Peabody, Northwestern, Oberlin work. It would either have to be Northwestern then hop over to Oberlin or Peabody then hop over to Oberlin.

We had my son rank the schools and even had categories and weighting lol (truly making this scientific) and Northwestern ranks lower than Peabody and Oberlin. My concern with Northwestern is would he even be eligible academically. He has good grades, but didn’t submit test scores. I know at some schools the Music Dept can influence admissions, anyone know how it’s done at Northwestern? I just would hate to spend money and time going to a school that he wouldn’t even be admitted to.

I saw people had issues with it last year. Have you tried a different browser? We haven’t looked yet ourselves.

We are wondering the same. My daughter is homeschooled. Athough she has been dually enrolled at the local community college since her junior year in highschool, she is still considered homeschooled and she was required to send her ACT scores. She received a 31 (32 superscored). She has straight A’s, 4.0. But is that good enough for Northwestern? But maybe a stellar audition (piano) would help?? Not sure. I wish all music schools that also requires student to be admitted to the 4 year university would tell us before we fly if they were admitted to the 4 year university or not. Frustrating to find out after the fact that they did not pass audition and it was possibly due to academics.

Oberlin passed here as well.

What an eventful week it’s been in here! This is a long one so go ahead and poor yourself a cup of tea or coffee and get comfy.

The last five days have been filled with highs and lows and highs again in this household. Just a reminder, my child is applying for Jazz voice. What’s also relevant to the story of the last 5 days is she’s also a musical theatre artist. Many folks are surprised she’s applying for jazz and not MT. Her first professional show was in 2019. She’s performed with someone who was in two national touring companies of Six, someone who made his Broadway debut this year in The Outsiders, someone else who made her Broadway debut this year as an assistant choreographer, and someone she performed opposite this summer while he was on break from a national tour. Two fellow child castmates from the show in 2019 also performed in national tours post-pandemic. Don’t worry, I would totally be rolling my eyes at this so not humble brag of a paragraph, so I’m not judging you, judging me :winking_face_with_tongue: .

Anyway, if you’re following, USC came in as a pass on Wednesday, which was such a relief! That audition and Peabody were the most complicated with their requirements. We were both feeling so confident and excited! Until “We regret to inform you…” came from UCLA, her top choice for many reasons, but honestly, while there is nothing predictable about this process, it was the one prescreen we were most confident about. Like, damn, really??? An evening of mild mourning-luckily, she already knows more noes than yeses will be a part of her life-hoping for that Peabody yes, and a final answer from Temple, and a super fancy boba got her through. Friday morning, she was already at school, but it wasn’t time to lock up cell phones, so she saw Peabody, but called me because she didn’t know the login. I was on a zoom meeting when I answered. I had already seen the email come through, so the person I was meeting with know about it so she was excited to have me answer my daughter’s call, and to look up the results for her. I screamed, my daughter said “cool, ok, bye” and I celebrated with my meeting mate.

She only had one final, so whe was home by 11 and we went out to brunch. Bad talked UCLA a little bit more (one of my favorite past times as a Cal alum-she’s also rolling her app over to letters and science so she still has the opportunity to be accepted-or rejected again  ), decided on her Peabody repertoire, and narrowed down her wild card song choices for USC.

In the afternoon and evening, she finally got around to memorizing a monologue for an audition she had on Saturday for A Chorus Line. She’d been working on her song choice with her voice teacher the last few lessons, so that was ready. But my child was sooooooooooooooooooooooooo nervous. I don’t know if UCLA had anything to do with it, or if it’s because it’s a show she absolutely loves. What I do know is after she finished her 32-bar cut and 1-minute monologue, she sent me a simple text, “that felt good” and as her mother I felt so relieved. After another hour she came out of the dance call, hopped in the car all sweaty and so confident and so happy the audition was the opening number choreography (IYKYK).

Last night, around 10:30, I’m cozy in bed like I hope you are reading this long post, and she bursts into my room and says “Callback!” So she got called back for Sheila, Diana AND Cassie (again, IYKYK), so now my job as her mom is to keep her focused this break on learning her new rep for final auditions, but still be so proud and excited for her. This company is educational theater for teens and young adults, so if she is cast, we actually have to pay for her to be in it. But the company is really amazing, she felt really good about the creative team’s vibe in the audition, and she is excited because so many of their alumni are working artists today.

Anyway, yay on you for reading this whole thing, and boooo on Julliard, Eastman, Peabody, UCLA, and whoever else is missing out on hearing more from our fabulously talented musicians!
