I don’t know, but I’d be surprised if they didn’t e-mail everyone whether they passed or not. It might just be that different studios send results at different times.
On the audition page for USC, it says the Millennium Biltmore L.A.** (Downtown LA) allows for 17 and over, but you need to inquire when booking.
I believe Steinhardt doesn’t let you know if you passed the prescreen. You may be invited to a live audition, and not being invited doesn’t mean you are not in. If your prescreen is enough, they don’t call you back and you get the decision whenever the acceptances/rejections go out in March. Basically, no call back doesn’t automatically mean no acceptance. So if you don’t hear from them based off of the prescreen, you don’t know what that means until the end. I saw evidence of this being true last year from an aplicant on Reddit. She got accepted based only on the prescreen. Was never invited to a live audition, nor notified of anything in between.
USC Hotel just required form to be signed and submitted
Thank You. That’s informative. We did a faculty consultation in the fall and then followed up with a campus visit where she audited some classes. Maybe they’ve seen enough.
And maybe she’s a “NO”! Dad isn’t the most objective judge! ![]()

I’ll close with “Thank you” to you all. This site has been a terrific resource for a parent trying to navigate all of this. You’re all very encouraging.
@Stagemom26 what if a student thinks they didn’t get in, if they don’t hear after prescreen, when they actually did get it. Wouldn’t that mean possibly saying yes to another school?
I suppose it could, but I also imagine most, regardless, make their decisions based on the decisions in their hand by April 1, so it would still be in the mix if accepted by then. Here is what their website says: Please be aware that auditions are only requested if the faculty would like more information on an applicant that would warrant an audition. Not being asked to submit an audition does not mean that you have been rejected.
It also said that not everyone will hear in December if they get a callback. Nerve-wracking for sure, but I guess it works for them.
Daughter BM Classical Voice. Anyone receive a RD Prescreen reply from NYU-Steinhardt yet? Their website is vague. Applied for RD at the ED2/Early RD deadline. Website states applicant MIGHT hear prior to the holiday break, but if they don’t it doesn’t mean they won’t. Elsewhere it says they will typically hear within 7 days of the prescreen deadline. But the normal prescreen deadline for RD is later!!! So has her 7-day window expired, or is she subject to the normal RD deadline? ARGH!!! I’ve also read Steinhardt wont reach out at all if the prescreen is rejected. Lots of “ifs
My Daughter ( Vocal Performance) was notified that she passed NYU Steinhardt prescreen on 1/7/25 this last cycle. She was invited to audition. That’s how I thought they did it for all applicants.
Yeah, according to their website, it’s not a given, and this young woman on Reddit got in without a callback audition, after worrying because she never heard back from the prescreen. Reddit - The heart of the internet
Thanks, everybody.
One of two things has to be true. She’ll get in or she won’t. I’m going to test the power of positive thinking.
In the Reddit link referenced, the individual was applying for a BM in Vocal Performance: Musical Theater as a transfer student. This is different program than BM in Classical Voice mentioned by SuperSop, and much different process than applying as a Freshman. Our experience is from this past year for a BM - Classical voice / Vocal Performance. I didn’t hear of any VP - Classic Voice majors who were accepted without an audition…although there may be some. However, I do know that my daughter received a notice that she passed her prescreen and was invited to audition. From others on this site, that seemed to be the norm with notices coming out around the end of the first week in January. For my daughter that was 1/7/25. Waiting is tough, but I suspect SuperSop will know in 10 days or so! Hang in there!
To beat a dead horse, the same is true for VP Classical Voice, according to the website. I was obsessed with this when Steinhardt was on my daughters list of possiblities, and the thought the parhaps, maybe, hopefully her prescreen would be enough and not require a trip to NY. I’m certainly not saying it’s common-I wouldn’t know. SuperSop is so right-her child will get in or she won’t. And she’ll find out sooner or later. I’m going to add on to the power of positive thinking-she’s got this!
From the Scheduling an Audition secion of the how to audition, BM Vocal Performance: Classical Voice:
Please be aware that auditions are only requested if the faculty would like more information on an applicant that would warrant an audition. Not being asked to submit an audition does not mean that you have been rejected.
Anyone know about Blair auditions? Would a 1 pm flight out of Nashville be aggressively early to head home after a 10 am Saturday audition? He will have spent the whole day prior in sample classes and at a dinner.
You have all been very helpful. I’ll let you know how it shakes out.
My only worry (full disclosure I’m a world class worrier) would be if somehow the panel gets behind schedule. Even though you have an early slot, we have had a couple of instances where the auditions run behind.
No experience with Blair. Hopefully someone else chimes in.
Me too! It sure seems like it would be enough time, but we are new to this and things do happen. If anyone does have insight on timing at Blair (Vanderbilt), I’d love to hear.
I would also worry it’s too aggressive. I would aim for a late afternoon flight.
Just a thought from our own personal experience as far as leaving enough time on audition days for the unexpected. We had a few surprises with 3 different kids–two voice and one jazz guitar. One was weather related–there was an ice storm coming in, and they slid auditions up to earlier in the day. Granted I am sure they would have had to have honored original times. Weather–which can’t be planned for–can throw everything off at the last minute. Another was an unexpected call back. It was a voice audition, and we had no idea that was how they were done at that specific school. My daughter’s audition slot was mid-afternoon and she sang for half of the faculty. They asked her to come back later that evening to sing again for all the faculty. We drove, so it wasn’t a big deal, but had we flown we would have had a decision to make. The last was a jazz audition. Once we got to the campus we were informed of an optional jazz jam for all auditionees being held at the end of the day. We weren’t in a hurry so could stay which ended up being a highlight of the entire audition season for my son–not to mention that there were definitely faculty members in the audience taking notes.
Which school was the jazz jam session?? curious if its one of the schools my son was invited to.
And I will add that my son now lives in Nashville. While I am sure traffic will be okay on a Saturday midday (barring bad weather), traffic can be an absolute mess in that city. So if your kid does end up there, avoid the need to drive around during the morning and evening commutes or weekend evenings.
