My son had his ED audition there last month. We think notification day is likely Tuesday. ![]()
Congratulations!
It’s totally a mini-acceptance-can’t get the big acceptance without it!
I hope this thread just blows up with results over the next week!
Me too.
I’m feeling pretty stressed and concerned that we let him get his hopes up really high for Bienen.
He’s been accepted to UMN and Lawrence and sent in prescreens to Michigan and Peabody so far but his heart is really set on Northwestern.
Two more acceptances yesterday
FIU - First official music school acceptance
FSU - Waiting on the CoM to send their acceptance
He got the email from Northwestern to schedule his in-person audition but I need to figure out which day we want to pick. I was hoping to knock out two schools at once but I need the other school to let us know if they are inviting him in-person or not before I have him commit to a date. I don’t want to wait too long and be forced into a date that we don’t care for.
@Midwestmom2022 thank you! Hoping he will end up with some interesting choices. @FSUSammy congratulations on the green lights! My son heard from Bienen, too. It is the first one he heard from, and it felt like big news here (even though there’s more work to do).
@Mnmom26 will be sending good energy for Tuesday! Do you have any practical tips for a Bienen audition, in terms of if they make space available for warmups, etc.? Just trying to figure out some logistics for a late morning time slot.
Which school are you waiting on that’s nearby Northwestern? If it’s Oberlin, I had checked last year’s thread recently to see approximately when their prescreen invites went out and it was Dec 20 and those parents referenced that it was Dec 20 the year before as well.
Congrats! Did you say your kiddo was trombone? Northwestern has a phenomenal program, very cool that he passed the prescreen!
Yup it’s Oberlin. I figured we could do his Northwestern audition on a Wednesday and (if he’s invited to Oberlin) then travel to the Cleveland area Thursday for a Friday audition at Oberlin. We are in South Florida so trying to minimize the back and forth travel as much as possible. I can’t remember what dates we put as preferred auditions dates for Oberlin so not sure if we’d be given the option to switch dates if say we chose to just split each a week from each other. Sure it compounds the back and forth travel but it also would be less school missed.
This is like a game of chess trying to put things in just the right spot lol
Yep, we are also trying to piggyback Oberlin on a trip if kid gets invited to both Eastman and Oberlin (4 to 5 hr drive between the two) we will book them on same 3 day block.
See now I don’t feel so crazy trying to do this “idea”. My husband said it’s about a 4-5 hours drive between Evanston and Cleveland which doesn’t sound too bad lol
@77mom Thank you! And yes. It would be an amazing option if it came to be.
Tell him you’re not crazy! Due to our kid playing cello and flying with it being a pain and risk every time, I am driving kid in our suv to every US audition. Upside is I don’t worry about flight delays and cancellations. Most are 4 - 6 hour drives from our house but Oberlin is the farthest. It will take us 6 hours to get to Eastman (we’ve done it once before) and then another 5 to Oberlin so that will be the most brutal drive home.
Now you’ve suddenly got me thinking about driving to Northwestern. Hmm, short flight or winter driving. Neither one feels 100% stress free.
Very true. For me if I can avoid one extra flight in the middle of the two schools then bonus.
Trombone flying isn’t always easy either, on smaller planes they don’t always fit up top and sadly checked brass instruments can be smashed; will he have just a tenor or does he also have an alto?
It was really well organized. They were assigned a practice room at check in and were able to stop back by the admissions office periodically to get directions as needed.
There seemed to be a lot of current students around, which made sense because they hold auditions during the school week and many of them were really friendly.
They sent out an email prior to the audition offering the opportunity for auditioning students to attend classes and performances, which was really nice.
My son has been on campus a few times in the past couple of years for completions, trial lessons, tour etc. and I always half hope he’ll find something to hate but really it’s just a great seeming program. Good luck to your son!
My D23 auditioned at Bienen and it was very well done. She had access to a practice room. There was also a nice space for parents to wait, with continental breakfast, etc.
Same here! Driving to all of them. Right now, considering the Oberlin-to-Vanderbilt possibility to avoid going home and back.
Ugh! That’s a hike but you’re right, even worse to drive east coast to Ohio then back to east coast only to turn around and head back to Nashville. That’s not pretty but I totally understand your thinking. Vanderbilt is not on my kid’s list or I would be pondering the same trek.
