Class Size

Here is the USC class size information according to 2009 US News & World Reports:
% of classes < 20 = 64%
% of classes > 50 = 11%
You may visit the following USC Schedule of Class web site to survey the Chemistry & Math class size:

Like all other large universities, USC’s general science classes are quite large. However, one thing worth to mention is that we use clickers in most of these large classes. Clicker is a wireless device that you purchase from the bookstore, and register it on the class web site. During the class, professors may post questions on screen and students will press the buttons on your own clicker to answer. It’s just like the “Poll the Audience” life line in the “Who wants to be millionaire” show. Students’ answers will be summarized in percentage and displayed on the screen. In my opinion, the use of clickers really helps to personalize (or minimize) the large classes in the following ways:

 1. Clicker serves as the attendance call and in-class quiz. Each student’s answers and whether they press the clicker will be logged by the computer and some professors count the clicker quiz as part of your final grade. So, clickers keep us attending the class and paying attention to the lecture.
 2. It helps the professor know students’ understanding. If high percentage of students gets the wrong answer then professors will explain it again.
