When I graduated from high school (many, many years ago), the class was gathered together and we were told what was ‘acceptable’ graduation attire. Light colored dresses for the girls, dark colored dress slacks and light shirts for the boys, NO JEANS, etc.

So we marched across the field and sat down on the bleachers, and a whole group of boys were wearing their dark dress slacks, and underneath they had neon orange socks, bright blue, cardinal red, black and white striped, etc. They didn’t really show until they sat down and their slacks rode up, and everyone cracked up.

Not really a funny moment, but one of my all time favorite pictures of my son is a picture during his HS graduation ceremony a couple years ago. He was walking back to his seat after getting his diploma when he looked up to see us, he held up his diploma and gave us what was probably the biggest smile I have ever seen on his face. We managed to take a picture at that exact moment, it was perfect.

LOL. I just remembered at S’s HS grad a couple of years ago, many of the seniors gave the principal a marble as they shook his hand. He had quite a collection by the end!

This year son’s college graduation was on Mother’s Day, so all of the speakers at each event had to mention what a great present it was. And it truly was. My kids gave me a card but I told them the graduation was all I really needed. And all that day (all weekend, actually) we ate out or went to receptions and a picnic so I didn’t have to cook or clean up anyway!

At S#1’s Swarthmore graduation last year, the engineering students engaged in what I understand is an annual ritual to “do something different.” When the first engineering student was presented with his diploma he turned toward the bell tower on campus and pointed what looked from a distance like the antenna of a remote control device. He rang the bell once, turned and passed the device to the next engineering student, and so on and so on. Unfortunately, the device eventually malfunctioned, but we all got the point and applauded wildly.
