Classic Movies

Dial M for Murder and Rear Window are great Hitchcocks- I think that North by Northwest is really overrated, though.
Casablanca is way up there on my Best Movies Ever list.

My favorite Hitchcock is “The Lady Vanishes”.
Well, one of my favorites.
Also The Third Man, with Joesph Cotton & Wilfred hyde-White.

I love Chariots of Fire. An all time great.

Another one I caught on Netflix which I’d missed when it came out “Hotel Rwanda”- a really great movie. Don Cheadle gives a great performance and the subject matter is shocking yet engrossing. I know that sounds like an odd way to put it.

Oh, if Hitchcock is the subject, don’t overlook The 39 Steps just because it’s really old. It is a tautly directed thriller made while he was still in Britain. (Heck, even his silent movie Blackmail, which is also available with sound - but is worse that way - is terrific.) Of his late films, Frenzy is the best. And if you don’t like Rebecca, there’s something wrong with you.

BTW, if you like funny movies, here’s a short list of the best:

Bringing up Baby. Maybe the funniest movie ever. (See also the terrific homage to it by Peter Bogdanovich called What’s Up Doc?) Add to this Holiday and The Philadelphia Story for 3 great comedies starring Cary Grant and Kate Hepburn.

Sullivan’s Travels, The Lady Eve and The Palm Beach Story, all written and directed by Preston Sturgess. (I’d include The Miracle of Morgan’s Creek but I think it shows that he was literally writing the movie as they shot it.)

It Happened One Night and You Can’t Take It With You, meaning Frank Capra comedies.

Ninotchka, The Shop Around the Corner and To Be Or Not To Be, meaning Ernst Lubitsch comedies. I’d add Trouble in Paradise and Cluny Brown but it’s hard to find a decent print of the former and the latter is unavailable in the US. Watch Ninotchka and you know why Greta Garbo was Greta Garbo.

After these, you can include a ton, from Ball of Fire and The Front Page, both directed by Howard Hawks, to about anything directed by Leo McCarey, like The Awful Truth.

Drama: Ben Hur
Comedy: Some Like It Hot

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

High Noon

Pillow Talk and I will second Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Gone with the Wind…but it is LONG.

Gone With The Wind!

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

Almost anything (old) with Sidney Poitier:

Lilies of the Field
Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner
In the Heat of the Night
To Sir with Love

The Godfather

Wow, I had to resignup, couldn’t log in.

Had to add my favorite movies;
Gaslight - couldn’t be more perfect.
Seven Samurai
Certainly agree, Children of Paradise
,La Strada
81/2
Also second - 39 Steps
and a silent by Murnau- Sunrise
also French Connection 1 and 2, I like them much better than the Godfather

@jacdad2, I’m dying to see Gaslight. (Sadly, it’s not free on Amazon Prime.)

My D loved Gilda. It is a classic. Philadelphia Story as well.
I love Camelot! Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein are classics.

Not for everyone, but I loved Splendor in the Grass, with Natalie Wood & Warren Beatty, directed by Elia Kazan…

Best version of Beauty & the Beast.
Jean Cocteau 1946.
If movies made after 1960 count, I will plug Wim Wenders Wings of Desire.
