Clothes for college-age boys

I wear skinny jeans even though I have fairly muscular thighs (or at least used to). The trick to pulling them off is to buy them 1-3 waist sizes up while obviously leaving the inseam unchanged. The waist does not get too loose because your thighs fill out the jeans, preventing them from slipping. My actual waist is 30" but when I buy Levis 511s for example, I’ll get a 31" if the denim is soft and has a little stretch or 32" if it’s rigid denim. And dress pants can of course be easily tailored to be slim and well-cut while still accommodating a guy with muscular things.

My son wears a 28 or 29 waist. I could find plenty of pants 28x28 or even 28x30 but it was very difficult to find jeans with a long enough leg (32). The Arizona jeans at JC Penneys do come in the smaller waist size with the longer length. They may not be the most fashionable name but no one sees the inside label.

I have no skinny college boys in my family, but DH wears an oddball size 33W pants in some brands, and I noticed that “oddball” sizes pop up regularly on “oddball” sites such as my favorite Euro-clearance place Yoox. Select pants and size XXS, and there will be some 27W and 28W pants with lengths up to 34 inches, e.g.:

My S HATES skinny jeans that make him look way TOO skinny & like a male model or similar. He much prefers khakis or something that makes him look like he is somewhat more filled out and muscular. We have found very few 28x28 slacks that fit him properly & look good on him, but are glad that at least we have found one style, brand & size that works.

S was relieved that most of his college years, baggy slacks were “in,” so others also wore them (even tho in his case, it was because he had such trouble finding a better-fitting pair of pants).

H also has a few challenges finding jeans that fit him properly, but he has more years to accummulate his wardrobe & never outgrows his clothing–just wears them out over MANY years. He’s a 30x30, but likes the more fitted brands like Calvin Klein so they don’t just hang on him.

I have found for my 6’3" S that I can sometimes find his size in the online store when the B&M (brick and mortar) store doesn’t carry it.

I am with Proudwisewoman. My S is just now growing out of the 28 x 32 Dockers khakis I found at JCPenney online (when even Dockers own site did not offer them). He is only 14, so I expect we will go from one challenging size to the next. Oh, well, H wore 39L with a 33" waist all his life until about age 45, so I am expert at finding unusual sizes

If that is a suit size, that is actually a fairly standard size with a 6" drop (drop = chest minus waist).

What gets tough to fit in suits (and dress shirts) are men with 10" or greater drops (e.g. 42" chest, 31" waist). Yes, suits can be altered, but greater alteration from the original design is less likely to look good.

My S & H are used to having challenges getting clothing that fit well. Supposedly, S is getting some clothing suitable for a work wardrobe while he is in Thailand. We are very happy that at least Banana Republic has ONE style and size of khakis that look good on him and are relatively reasonably-priced. It is only available on-line or by phone. I hope they continue to stock it!

H is still wearing clothing he had made in Thailand nearly 20 years ago, so again, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. :)

tama, make sure you buy boxers and not tightie whities.

Bayberry, funny you should mention that. When my younger son was in about third grade, he told me to buy him boxers. I had been getting him the cutest little character briefs. Apparently he was one of the last two boys in his class who wasn’t wearing boxers. I threw away all his tightie whities and replaced them with boxers that day. Didn’t want the poor thing marginalized for his underwear…

So, thanks, but that’s one thing I’ve got “covered.”

Our S didn’t switch to boxers until HS, I believe. Turned out to be a very good thing in our household since he & H wear the same size & this way I can tell who gets what underwear. H is a traditionalist & likes his whites.
