<p>In Greek systems, sometimes seniors “bequeath” things to the kids beneath them. I gave away lots of Bermuda bags that way :-). S has a coat, t shirts and sweatshirts he accumulated that way. </p>

<p>My children took lots of clothes, particularly underwear and socks, with their names in them to college. Plenty of those clothes had gone with them on church youth trips, in the days when I wrote their names in Sharpie on the labels or on the bottom of the socks. If I hadn’t done so, my daughter would have lost lots of clothes on those trips. On church trips it matters, because someone will pick items up and return them. In college, well, forget that, so she has lost lots of clothes in college, even the ones with her name on the labels. None of my children have ever complained about their (fading Sharpie) names in their clothes, though.</p>
<p>I agree with the other posters that I wouldn’t put labels in for college, but I sympathize.</p>
