Clothing storage ideas

I envy you! The only house where we didn’t share a closet was our first house that had two reach in closets. We divvy up the space pretty evenly in the single walk in but I have more hanging space and h has more shelves. We did put custom built ins in this closet and it was not as bad as we expected. We did our walk in closet, my “accessories” closet and a kitchen pantry for $6k.

I’m just posting because it looks like the Container Store is having 30% off Elfa this weekend.

I stumbled upon this thread and thought I’d share what I’ve done with my small walk-in closets. I live in an older Midwest suburban home. I like to hang most of my clothes. I have one of the longer walls with wood shelving I bought many years ago from probably Home Depot. I use a few IKEA boxes that serve as drawers…for socks, underwear, workout shorts, etc

The other two walls have hanging space. The shorter wall for long items and the last wall has a low and higher bar with a shelf above each.

What I find very useful for maximizing the capacity of the closet is this clothes rack from The Container Store.

I hang most of my stuff so wanted more hanging space. Having more hanging space means my clothes aren’t crammed together and I can easily see “what I’ve got”.

I like the Container Store rack I purchased because it’s on wheels and is narrow enough to be easily maneuvered in and out of the closet. The ends of the rack extend…which I’ve found useful when prepping for going out. I can hang the pieces of my outfit as I make decisions. I’ve also used them for hanging items I am air drying.

Lastly, if I really like something, I tend to buy multiple items of the same thing but in different colors. I’ve embraced my IKEA wooden hangers with the connectors.

I have 6 very large closet and a walking closet all to myself. They are all full. :frowning:
I “customized” 3 floor to ceiling closets in the bedroom through Container. I out in shelves for sweaters, bins for under wears, shoe racks and hangers. I don’t have dressers in the bedroom.
I also have an IKEA closet with shelves in the study.
I use vacuum pack bag to store pillows and linens.

How deep are the shelves that you use those Ikea boxes on?

My shelf unit is more than 10 yrs old but is similar to this one:

Mine is about 15 inches deep and 24 inches wide…different from the one above. I have 2 shelf units that are side by side on one wall. The shelves are adjustable, which I like. The Drona boxes act like drawers. They allowed me to remove the dresser from our master bedroom which made the room feel bigger.

Also there are 2 different sizes of Drona boxes. I think I linked the larger one in my previous post but actually have more of the smaller one. It’s about 10 inches, rather than 13 inches in width. I can only fit one of the larger ones on a shelf, as opposed to 2 side-by- side with the smaller ones. I do use a couple of the larger ones on the bottom shelves and roll sweatpants on end in them for easy access.

Our new house that is still under construction has two sets of built-in shelves. They’re meant for shoes, and I just don’t think they’re very deep. I need to measure them.

This is about you. Fold or hang?
Hang–go for double rods with some space underneath for bins.

Fold–Need a dresser with drawers deep enough to store your folded clothes.

I did Kon Marie (you start with clothes) and I fold almost everything. I was able to whittle down a lot just based on keeping what I liked (not what was old). With the folding technique I saved a ton of room.

I do a lot of hanging in closet and a lot of folding in dresser, (usually Marie Kondo, upright a bit like file folders). Also some rolling and storing in narrow shelves in closet. Some stuff like underwear and socks goes in plastic drawers in the closet. A few things, like worn-once jeans, on hooks on the back of closet door.

For my hanging clothes, I like to arrange by type (short sleeved shirts, long sleeved etc). Then within each type I shift to “current” end when item is worn or put back from laundry. That way I can easily judge which are the the less used items when considering a declutter.

I hang pants together, dresses and jumpsuits together and tops together. Everything is arranged by color. I have drawers in my closet for underwear, bras, yoga and workout clothes, etc.

I also arrange by color. I even organize my husbands polos (stored Marie Kondo style in a drawer) by color.

I do the same.

Everything is organized by type, season, and color. We are lucky that we have the space.

Oooh - workout clothes. Those are in my son’s old bedroom (clean ones in drawers, worn ones on hooks behind the door). Makes it handy if I need to get up early for pickleball or running, not wake my husband.
