<p>How would you do the restore though without an operating system?</p>
<p>That’s kind of a reason why I keep a full operating clone on a hard drive. I may be able to boot to the attached drive and do repairs, etc. from it.</p>

<p>Same way you do it with any other software. They have a recovery boot disk. I assume just enough to do disk and internet operations. Maybe it is a flavor of Linux.</p>
<p>I noodled around on the Carbonite site and it looks like you have to create a bootable CD/DVD to restore the mirror image from an external hard drive. I didn’t see an option to restore a mirror image over the internet. This implies that you would need a second system to create the bootable CD/DVD and to copy the mirror image to an external hard disk. It would also imply that you need an external hard disk.</p>
